Queen Elizabeth II HAS DIED.

What a long and storied life she's lead.

In 1984, while the Queen was on one of her visit to Canada, the Queen was scheduled to visit our newly opened science center to officially give it its grand opening. My Dad who worked there, managed to organize for my Sister to hand the Queen a bouquet of flowers. We even ended up getting an official Royal picture back that still hangs in our hallway.

I'm not much of a monarchist, but I like to think I have a good sense of history. So, it was a bit of a surprise to hear that the Queen had died. Also, I once saw both her and Prince Philip YEARS AGO, when I was a kid. I'm talking about the early 1980s.

RIP Your Majesty.

I was wondering how the succession would work; I don't really keep up on the details about this sort of thing.

Kor
Charles became King the moment the Queen died. People speculated that he might abdicate in favor of William, but I think it's going to take an unprecedented set of circumstances for any of the next few generations to even consider that, given that this branch of the family only came to the throne because Edward VIII put his own selfish interests above his duty to his country.*

*which might actually have turned out for the better regardless of how successful King George and Queen Elizabeth were, since Edward was something of a Nazi fan.

Anyway, the line of succession goes: Charles, William, George, and then whoever George's oldest child is (it's now the oldest child, not the oldest male). This will take us into the 22nd century, if the next generations are as long-lived as the previous ones.

^ Plus, he'd already started taking over some of her duties months, if not at least a year ago. The official ceremony and transfer of power will be mostly symbolic in that sense.
