Sliders, that underrated 1990s sci-fi show

The "Azure Gate Bridge" still gets me. :guffaw:

I've seen bridges that hue in real life. In the episode it almost seems outlandish... except it is not.

Thats interesting, the last episode i saw was with the Kromaggs v1.0 then.

Yeah, the latest upgrades aren't always better. Had the characterizations been as clever, the difference in looks wouldn't have bothered me, and I did try the mindset of "the parallel world's parallel world's version of the Kromaggs" too.

Part of the reason why many didn't go back to SLIDERS for season 4 was since SciFi Channel got it, not every house had that channel. At that time, SciFi Channel was a premium channel and if you didn't have satellite or one of the packages, you wouldn't be able to see it. Remember, FOX was a basic cable channel.

I know this happened in my case.

I had cable at the time that Kromaggs 2.0 came out. I kept with the show until season 4 ended, when I ditched cable because the cost of a DVD series set was cheaper per month -- I didn't see season 5 for years - which is surprisingly good and felt more like sci-fi than anything since season 2 -- though casual viewers would have enough problems with parallel worlds, never mind it's the same person via an experiment gone awry...

Yeah, Kari Wuhrer was brought in to sex up the show. Luckily they bothered giving her more beyond that after S3.

I remember reading that Sabrina Lloyd left the show due to how she was treated by Kari, which is why her 'appearance' later in the show to describe her fate was done as a voiceover. Which is that much more chilling, the mind starts to visualize where the screen won't show or spoonfeed.

Love this show and every few years I do a rewatch. It's fun even including season 3 but after that I struggle to finish the run to the end. Season 4 and 5 I find a bit of a struggle to end.

Yeah, 1 & 2 are definitive and from there almost everyone agrees where the plummet occurs, and what's deemed watchable after it moves to a new network. But for all the moments I love 5's improvements, it's got plenty I struggled with as well. Was expecting more out of the coffee episode too...

It feels wrong, but I remember someone saying that the reason the Kromags went apeshit and killed all humans is that they never found any other Kromags on any other alternate Earth's.

Logically that's propoganda, and what really happened is that the Kromags we know destroyed all other Kromag Earth's because they were an actual threat, opposed to all the humans on the multitude of Earth's who were just food.

The "Azure Gate Bridge" thing drove me crazy, because it's based on the misconception that the name "Golden Gate Bridge" refers to the color of the bridge itself. The bridge's color is actually a shade of orange vermilion named "international orange," used for high visibility in fog. The Golden Gate is the name of the strait that it crosses, and it was named that by John C. Fremont about nine decades before the bridge existed, in honor of the harbor of Byzantium, the Golden Horn, because Fremont saw it as "a golden gate to trade with the Orient." So it would still be called the Golden Gate Bridge no matter what color it was -- and it would be insane to paint it a shade of blue, which would make it far harder for ships and aircraft to avoid in the fog.

I didn't like the original Kromagg design from "Invasion," so I was fine with the redesign and reinterpretation. Heck, it worked for the Klingons and the Trill. And the parallel worlds make the change easy to justify.

Although I did have a problem with the name "Kromagg," which was clearly inspired by "Cro-Magnon." I assume the idea was to imply that they were a different, more "primitive" hominid species, but then it would've made more sense to allude to Neanderthals or Homo habilis, say. Cro-Magnons were the first early modern humans to settle in Europe, only slightly different in appearance from modern humans.

Wade's fate was surely horrible but also Quinn's mother was subjected to that as well, but thankfully we never see it but she was forced to breed as well but didn't they do worse and cut Wade's head off and stick her in a computer or something?

She was a head in jar, literally. She and other humans were heads in jars, being used as a psychic computer by the Kromags.

She and the others overloaded the computer and destroyed themselves, ruining the Kromags evil plans, temporary.

Pretty freaking horrible way to kill her off.

Maybe they thought the writers would have Logan and Quinn do the nasty together, in which case it is an example of him fucking himself

Apparently they didn't think the actress was pretty enough, or something

Tal Celest from Voyager?

Even Voyager invited her back...

Holy fircking shit.

McLellan married actor J. P. Gillain in February 2012 and gave birth to a son, Sebastian, in 2013.[4] McLellan and Gillain separated in 2014, with McLellan filing for custody of their son. Their divorce was finalized in 2016.[5] Gillain was arrested on first-degree rape and aggravated crime against nature charges against their then-three-year-old son in January 2020[6] (charges were dropped for insufficient evidence in May 2020[7]).

As of July 2021, McLellan has an outstanding arrest warrant for kidnapping.[8]

That is sad and weird.

Yeah, if they make it public, either through social media or the news or whatever, then it's fair to discuss it. The only time I really have a problem with it, is when it's stuff that came from places like TMZ or the tabloids, stuff that the person didn't talk about publicly.
Fwiw he was on Newsnight tonight, reviewing Rings of Power. Very positive, said how Gorbachev was a great man, how Tolkien got it right by fighting Germany, and that you should keep watching the series and see what you think.

I don't know how I feel about the idea of Faketuro accompanying the team...right up until his sacrifice.

Wasn't that a topic of debate among fans that the Aturo we got in season 3 was not the same one that they started with having been offed by the one from I think Exodus?

Rather, that he'd been left behind on the planet of "Post-Traumatic Slide Syndrome" and his impostor from that world had taken his place.

  • The famous climax of this episode, depicting one of two Arturo's sliding while the other remains after a confusing struggle, has remained unresolved per the show's official canon. However, Tracy Tormé had stated in an interview that he believes the wrong Arturo made it through the wormhole, going into detail and stating that he would have resolved the matter had he remained on the show. Whether the Arturo who slid is the true Arturo or not, will likely remain unknown.

I'm probably not alone in preferring to think it was the impostor Arturo who died in "Exodus" while the real one remained alive and well on the "Slide Syndrome" world, or maybe invented his own sliding system to travel the multiverse.

Oh ok thanks for that. I thought it was the asteroid episode that they switched him in oops

No, the asteroid episode was "Last Days," episode 6 of season 1. You mentioned "Exodus" before, but that's the third-season 2-parter in which Arturo dies at the end. It involves an Earth about to be destroyed by a pulsar.

It was one the episodes that most everyone on the show apparently hated. Tracy Torme in particular called in one of the worst episodes of television ever.

The plot was beyond stupid and the "science" of it was ridiculous. John Rhy-Davies had written a story idea, using some sound scientific research (he apparently studied in the sciences before getting the acting bug) but the producers took it and shredded it, replacing it w/ nonsense--like going to the lower levels of a parking garage will save you from bursts of gamma radiation that had already wiped out all other life on Earth. I don't know if it was a "screw you" or just lazy coke heads not giving a damn.

Well... the gamma would've been absorbed anyway by the hundred miles of atmosphere between it and the ground -- but the atmosphere would've re-emitted it as ultraviolet that would've been utterly devastating, burning anyone exposed to it and turning the air to toxic smog. Not to mention the intense lightning storms and the resultant global fires. And a sustained gamma bombardment would strip away the atmosphere eventually. Still, being deep within a parking garage could plausibly protect you from the UV long enough to delay the inevitable, or allow you to escape through a wormhole if one were available. If that's what happened in the episode, then it's not entirely implausible.
