It was actually a communicator too, as Castillo is seen using it as such after Garrett died. Maybe it was brand-new technology and only the captain was issued one and the rest of the crew still used hand communicators?

IIRC, Christopher MacDonald tapped his badge because that's what he'd seen everyone else doing, not realizing the era the Enterprise C was from was meant to be before badges were communicators. But fanon has since run with the belief that they had prototype commbadges on the Enterprise C.

I mean…the Ent-C is only 20 years from TNG. Its not that far of a stretch that prototype comms badges existed then.

honestly the commbadge is not much different from the wrist communicators of the first two movies anyway

That’s…odd, to say the least. If it was an outtake, why did they leave it in and not just reshoot the scene? If the scene required him to use a communicator, why didn’t they give him an old handheld one, or an Ent-D badge? And what was the point of only giving Garrett a badge, and then Castillo when he became captain, if not because they wanted to use it as a communicator prop from 2344?

It's well known Yesterday's Enterprise was filmed under severe time constraints. Though even then mistakes do happen. I mean hell, the final scene on the episode Geordi is still wearing the uniform from the alternate timeline despite the fact that everyone else in the scene is wearing the proper Prime Universe uniforms. Or even a year later in Family, no one realized until the episode aired that Jack Crusher was wearing the wrong badge with his monster maroon.
The intent was that Castillo would be speaking into the bridge's intercom, meaning he was essentially supposed to be speaking into thin air, so to speak. MacDonald then reflexively tapped his badge because that's what he'd seen the others do, and no one realized he shouldn't have done that until the episode aired and all the fans were like "wait a minute..."
For whatever reason, they were only allowed one movie era badge when filming Yesterday's Enterprise. It went to Garrett since she was basically the lead guest star. When she was killed, they decided there was no reason why Castillo couldn't wear it then.

    That's true.

I'm not 100% certain that this was a mistake. I seem to recall that they were looking for a movie-era badge, couldn't find one, and used a TNG badge because a) that's all they had on hand, and b) Jack Crusher made that log right before the switch to the first season TNG uniforms, so using a TNG badge in this instance wasn't a continuity error (i.e. the new commbadge came first; the TNG uniform came after.)

That would track along with what happened in "Yesterday's Enterprise" then, with the captain test driving a prototype combadge before the roll out to the fleet proper. Then the new uniforms came to match the shiny new badges. *cue Blazing Saddles joke here*

IIRC, the old TNG Companion said it was a genuine mistake which no one caught onto while filming.

Would any of the production team on the stage floor have even known it was an "error"? It's a Starfleet badge, and on the TNG set that means it's a communicator.

And there's no reason to think in-universe that it wasn't a comm badge either. It's fifty years after the TOS movies. They upgraded.

Same with the Jack Crusher thing. They just brought in the new badges before the uniform change. There's no mistake there.

Only if its animated. Many of the classic actors are now at a point in life where their characters would either be admirals or enjoying their retirement on some beautiful planet, so that would get old pretty fast.
But a little animated anthology sorta like Short Treks I could see.

TAS used to be the exception to live action, but by now animated Trek is well established.

    Mutiny on the Pegasus.

That's a story that I would like to see included in any Star Trek anthology series. "Pegasus" is one of my favorite TNG episodes.

The mutiny is prominently mentioned during the episode. That piqued my curiosity. I want to know more; and not just about the mutiny, but also about the secret phasing cloak project. Give us the backstory about the phasing cloak project, how Pressman was able to keep it covert, and maybe even offer an explanation about why the Federation agreed to the one sided Treaty of Algeron in the first place.

On the matter of the Treaty of Algeron, it wouldn't surprise me if the writers came up with some lame explanation. But even if it is lame, at least it would give fans another thing to gripe about.

It would probably make sense to have Pressman be the focus of the story rather than Riker. Afterall, phasing cloak seemed to have been Pressman's handiwork. Of course, the story can culminate with the mutiny itself and Riker's role in trying to snuff it out.

There, that is my story pitch, or wish, to Mr. Goldsman or whomever would be running the show.
