Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

I see what you're saying. But, he did include JFK's assassination and the Vietnam War. And the old show threw in plenty of other peripheral events which were adjacent to big social events, such as racial equality, gender equality etc.

Showing a Muslim-American dealing with the post 9/11 bigotry is a good shout. No reason they couldn't do both, either. And I'm not too sure how involved or how much say Bellisario will have.

Sadly, it's not as if there aren't countless examples of other (famous) atrocities or trends they could explore. For example, the rise in mass/school shootings. online/social media bullying, bombings, bigotry, sexism, etc. In fact, the majority (if not all) of themes which were applicable during the original run are still as relevant now and in the intervening 30 years as they were between the 50s to 90s. With a smattering of new ones, or a modern spin due to tech developments etc.

I wonder too, will the new show carry on the trend of 'before they were famous' cameos such as Buddy Holly, teaching Michael Jackson to Moonwalk, Elvis, Chubby Checker, Stephen King etc and, if so, which they'll have.
ButJFK still died. And Vietnam still happened, some PoW got home earlier

Doing something during a multiyear war is not the same as doing a story about a single famous historical event. And he did the assassination years into the show, as a conscious exception to the well-established pattern. Out of 97 episodes, only a handful broke the usual approach. I'm not saying there can't be exceptions. I'm saying that if this revival intends the same approach as the original, we shouldn't expect them to rush into something like that in the first season. And conversely, if they do rush into something like that, then it means this show won't be as distinctive in its approach as the original. Because that's what every other time travel show would do.

And the old show threw in plenty of other peripheral events which were adjacent to big social events, such as racial equality, gender equality etc.

Yes, obviously, of course. The show often tackled social issues. What I'm saying is that it mostly didn't do the usual time travel cliche of only doing famous events from the history books like the Titanic or Pearl Harbor. It found a more nuanced way to talk about history, one that wasn't just about the headline-grabbing events but was more ground-level.

Those were something I felt the original show overdid. It gets very improbable when the same guy happens to be accidentally responsible for inspiring so many famous people. That's the same kind of gimmick that the show avoided in its main plots.

IIRC, Sam didn't actually teach Michael Jackson how to do the moonwalk. Sam just leaped in as some kid in like 1962 and happens to meet young Michael, who already knows the moonwalk and demonstrates it for him.

That said, the thing with Chubby Checker was :censored:ing hilarious.

And I’m not saying that it will, that I expect it to be, nor that it should be the norm for the new show to do something like the Oklahoma bombing every week. Just that events like those could be done, as an exception - same as the original - in several ways. It’s not impossible, as some have posited.

You’re reading and replying to something you think is in my posts which just isn’t there.

Potato, potato. They weren’t exactly littered through every episode and they were fun but of brevity when they did happen.

But, hey if you want to poo poo what could have been a bit of fun speculation rather than indulge, whatever floats your boat.

I think Sam's "kisses with history" were often great, and I'll be disappointed if they're done away with on the new show.

Every now and then would be cute. It's the overuse I had an issue with. Some things are nice when they're rare, but get devalued when they're routine.

I have a theory why we see Sam always dealing just with, well, "mundane" cases. Do you remember the episodes with the "Evil Leapers"? One of them said something like "Would you like to go back to doing the really awful and terrible things we did before? Be glad we deal with things like marital infidelity or the like."

Here, my theory is that Sam is a "Good Leaper" who deals, in fact, with "little things". There are other "Good Leapers" instead who deal with preventing nuclear catastrophes and the like. If it weren't for them we would now be extinct or in a post-apocalyptic world

Just my two cents. ;)

Or maybe we're wrong to assume that what defines the cosmic importance of a change is how famous the event was.

Is anyone worried that this show premieres in less than a month and we've had no promotion at all?
I've seen quite a few commercials for it while I've been watching American Ninja Warrior, America's Got Talent, and Password.
My only complaint is that they keep showing the same vague teaser, that doesn't include any real footage from the show.
This is the Canadian CityTV versions, but it's the same trailer just with airing information for CityTV instead of NBC.

About the only "kiss with history" I couldn't stand was the Buddy Holly one. To think that "Peggy Sue" started out as a song about a pig...

1) thank you for sharing - hadn't seen it overseas here
2) probably the "lack of real footage/dialogue/scenes" also has to do with the behind the scenes issues (changes in staff/production, pilot/episode reshuffle and all)

where is the new QL actually filmed - Vancouver, LA, Toronto, NY, Atlanta - someplace else?

the teaser shows a waterfront street sign and what could be the gastown steam clock in Vancouver.
