Playmates Toys

I just got Commander Saru from Amazon. The packaging is a little awkward but the figure looks pretty cool. The back of the packaging has a "Q" Code that you scan that directs you to the Playmates Star Trek website, where you can get more info about each character in the series. There's also a brief synopsis of the "Star Trek Universe"

"In 2063, Earth made its first contact with an alien species, launching the planet and its inhabitants onto an installer stage. In the next century United Earth established a space exploration and defense service, Starfleet, and co-founded The United Federation of Planets, a benevolent organization of hundreds of the worlds. The chronicles of Starfless are collectively known as the Star Trek Universe."

I dont have a way to upload pics.

it is interesting that they use a slightly softer material for the uniform jacket. Sorta the same way art asylum did the uniforms. It’s not all hard plastic like the previous line.

and there is a noticeable size difference but it’s not super rediclious. It really is about a half inch or so.

The mouth looks funny on Saru. I think it kinda throws the rest of the face off.

looking at the close up on Data over on Amazon, I just noticed that they messed up the collar. It’s painted metallic gold around the neck instead of the uniform gold.

I kind of wish I could order Kirk also -- but I gotta say, I haaaaaaate the uniforms. The maroons for Khan through TUC are my most hated of all Trek uniforms. It is just not aesthetically pleasing to me.

Maybe I'm ultimately gonna end up with Burnahm, Saru, Riker, Khan...

I am glad Amazon gave us lots of pictures, especially closeups. Just wish they would get in Spock, Riker and Picard so I can better judge the sculpts.

I'm a little surprised they didn't do the original series uniforms, I think there's more nostalgia love for TOS than the Meyer-Bennettverse.

Yeah, the monster maroons were hardly done in the original line. Plus this year is the 40th anniversary of WoK.

I was always surprised they went with TMP over WoK when they did the main crew (minus Scotty and Checkov) for the first movie line.

Now that we have better closeups I think I’m opting out of buying these.

They don’t look like they’re good quality sculpts, and I HATE having the copyright so noticeable and BIG on their backs. Also, what’s up with the weird thing wrapping around Data’s hand for the phaser? That wasn’t a thing in the 90s and it’s a huge downgrade to have it be a thing now.

Disappointing, as I had planned to buy them all up.

The original Data did have those handles on his equipment so he could hold them.

Strange how the packaging copied the original text “Android access panels” and “tricorder with holster” when he doesn’t seem to have either the opening panels or the holster any more.

Oh, that was a fun flashback you just gave me! I loved fidgeting with those "android access panels" back in the day and had completely forgotten that detail.

...
I still have the original Data, and I can confirm that this is the same way that the 90s Playmates Data figure was made; both the Season 3/4 and season 1/2 uniform versions.
See here with the stupid purple loops: http://www.16bit.com/fotd/120917-data-star-trek-tng-s1.shtml
The earlier figure with the later uniform had them in neon orange.

Out of the TNG officers, only Data had this "feature" since his hands were sculpted flat and open instead of with curled fingers to grip accessories. I never understood why.
