Time brings changes of value, and sometimes, with it, mediocrity. Recall that when there were Chopins, Mozarts and Beethovens, the people who could learn to use those instruments were limited, largely by socioeconomic factors. Now we have more access, including to those artists themselves to learn from.

So, we have taken something that was elite and limited and broadened it out.

Also, we can't really replicate the past. It's, to take your music analogy, like a band coming back together after a while and someone asks, "Will this album be like your first one?" And the answer to that is a hard "No." Why? Because the musicians have learned from their debut album, their mistakes and have changed musically with time. To recreate the past would basically be like saying "pretend TOS et. al" doesn't exist and make Star Trek. How do you do that in a culture that has had Star Trek for 50 years?

Different Strokes for different folks I guess. Yes for me SNW is not the same as TOS, however, for me it does produce/evoke the same feelings and enjoyment level I get from watching a TOS episode that I like.
    ^^^
And it does that more than any of the later installments of Star Trek includingTAS, the TOS era feature films, and way more than anything from the Rick Berman and Brannon Braga era (TNG, DS9, the 1 season of VOY I slogged through, DS9, or ENT <-- and I didn't enjoy these last two just not as much as TOS or SNW.)

And it goes without saying that aside from SNW, STD S2 is also a favorite of mine from the current Alex Kurtzman era of Star Trek.

(Not really interested in or watching Star Trek Prodigy, as I was really disgusted with the episode where they used audio taken directly from episodes from the now deceased Leonard Nimoy and others in an attempt to create a holographic Mr. Spock, etc. and didn't feel like watching it after that episode; so no comment or rating on it from me.)

STRANGE NEW WORLDS (I've only seen the pilot so far so this ranking might go down)

I haven't seen PRODIGY yet, so no comment there. DISCOVERY and PICARD not only have no business being STAR TREK series, they have no business being TV series at all.

Of course the series that are currently in production could shift position based on how they go. Picard would've been a lot higher on the list if I did this before I saw the second season.

I don't know how to quantify it, but it feels like Star Trek more than any of the new series and I love it. I'm a bit behind atm as Paramount+ in the UK only has up to episode 9 but I only have good things to say about it. Didn't buy into Quintos Spock at all, but Ethan Peck, for me, has absolutely nailed it.

I'd love for this energy to be replicated into a series set on a Fed starship around the same time as the events of Picard.

I'm really into The Orville too. I'd definitely watch a Seth MacFarlane Star Trek series too.

Orville S3 and SNW S1 are so similar in premise and execution, it's been like watching alternating episodes of the same show with 2 entirely different casts.
