    If all that is required is they not profit off the movie, they could just release it free on YouTube without monetization. Unless that counts as advertising the company or something, because of the good publicity.

    Has anyone checked if we’re living in a sequel to The Producers?

    Remember that time WB made a good decision with their DC properties?

    Yeah. Me neither.

    If so, the sequel sucks. At least in the original, people got to see the show. Although, from Discovery’s point of view, they learned the most important lesson of The Producers—don’t let anyone see the product lest it end up actually popular.

    You know, if they didn't want to release it theatrically or on HBO Max, they could at least shop it around to other streaming services. You think Netflix wouldn't at least pay them the film's budget in order to get a completed Batgirl movie featuring Michael Keaton's Batman? Not to mention JK Simmons and Brendan Fraser.

    The idiot in charge doesn't want any DC movies that are not mega budget blockbusters. That's why I'm not holding my breath for 'Blue Beetle' (which frankly looks more like a pilot for a CW show) getting released either.

    Sure: MOS / BvS / WW / AM / ZSJL / SS / Joker were handled to make some the best comic adaptations ever committed to film.

    I never understood the Micheal Keaton taking over as Batman thing. He’s 70 years old… (almost 71.) Let’s say the DCEU/Justice League thing got back on track, how many movies of wearing black rubber and running around in a cape would he even have in him? You’d have to just replace him again in a few years.

    It’d be like Marvel getting Robert Duvall to replace RDJ as Iron Man

    (ps. I wish these WB/Discovery bosses would go work at Sony..)

    I just do not understand the strategy. Moonshot was on our family movie night watch list, we just hadn't gotten there yet. Are they just TRYING to alienate customers?

    If the rumours are true that they'll be merging HBO Max with Discovery Plus they'll be getting rid of/cancelling/shelving a lot more.

    Yeah, AT&T had already screwed that up, now Discovery is making sure any chance of reconciliation with Hollywood are dead and buried.

    I hope every single one of them tells Discovery exactly what jackasses they are. What a way to spit in somebody's face, "Oh you're so talented we're not going to release your movie at all."

    What a shameful fate for one of the few remaining non-Disney movie companies. One of the oldest too

    Feel free to criticize me..but I can see why the new WB management thinks it’s not profitable.

    I had a hard time trying to find the "formula" for profitablity, but i thought this seemed reasonable
    https://www.quora.com/How-much-money-must-a-movie-really-make-at-box-office-to-break-even

    So based on their formula:

    $75 million = original cost

    $15 million = due to Covid (as reported by now NPR!)

    And let’s estimate

    $30 million = to “upgrade” from a streaming movie to a blockbuster theater movie

    So $120 million Production

    And if that means the marketing budget is 50% of that

    $60 million Marketing

    $180 million total budget.

    So $360 million, according to this article, is just to break even.

    Looking at Box Office Mojo, I figure Birds of Prey was a good comparison

    https://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchise/fr340233989/?ref_=bo_frs_table_9

    Similar budget, probably similar fanbase, and released just before the pandemic, so it was able to make most of its “normal” money before the shutdown.

    Birds of Prey did

    US = $84 million

    International= $121 million

    Total = $205 million

    So that could be a “loss” of $150 million… which also includes manpower and PR time. $90 million, while a lot, might be worth it so they can focus on “better “ projects.

    That said, I really hate they did that to Batgirl….it would have been interesting to see.

    And the streaming model …I really question how a streaming service can profit from new movies, especially big budget ones. Now, going to theatrical, and then go to an exclusive streaming service…THAT makes sense. But man, that’s a lot.

    And I think similar miscalculations especially with CNN…. Yeah, $300 million seems like a waste. But even if you could get 1 million subscribers (which I totally doubt, especially if they aren’t watching with those numbers on other platforms where customers don’t specifically pay for CNN), for $10 a month (a lot for such a service)…You would need 3 years just to pay for that $300 million, NOT including ONGOING costs. Yeah…that just would be a money loser. It reminds me of a fundraising scheme at our church which totally overestimated people who were already tithing, let alone be willing to donate even more.

    I know many people here hate how intertwined the MCU is (and I will write more on the DCFU vs. MCU thread), but their method (which really is like how both the COMICS works for BOTH Marvel & DC) allows for drop off an single-property-only fans (i.e. Batman fans, Spiderman fans) to drop off, because there is enough of a momentum of ALL-Marvel fans to go from each new production and excite potential new fans.

    With Batgirl, you MIGHT have had Bat-fans, who who ollow ANYTHING Bat -related, not JUST Batman. (there are other bases such as Bad Boys and/or Ms Marvel fans who would follow those creatives, but at THIS point those are relatively small bases)

    This current mess reminds me of what has been happening all along – extreme reactions to “bad” things currently happening, and result is confusion instead of excitement and momentum. It’s hurting ALL of DC, and is a shame…because they have had the most recognizable heroes (and even logos) in the world.

    Announcing the cancellation during one of the directors' wedding also seems like a very particular "fuck you" or at best a "Like I give a damn about that guy."
