DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

The reason I ask is because this is Discovery we're talking about, they're not exactly known for scripted series. I've actually been wondering about this ever since the deal went through. I'm assuming they're at least going to let WB Pictures keep making scripted movies?

On the Turner channels yes, scripted is dead. At least for the time being. I suspect the only reason there are 3 shows left is due to contract issues. CW has been sold to Nexstar which doesn't have WB's pockets, which is probably why most of their shows are being cancelled. If all or only most shows are being cancelled, :shrug:

I would be incredibly surprised if HBO kills all scripted content though.

That would be a literally insane decision.
 
The story originates from the New York Post, which I am to understand is not the most trustworthy paper, and it cites an anonymous source.

The writer also says the movie was set for a release in late 2022, which considering the delay of The Flash, is quite unlikely, and he cites the absence of Batgirl from the DC movie panel at SDCC as evidence for his source's claim. That, though, is tied to Batgirl being hard to promote without mentioning the Flash movie, which is currently hard to promote, as well. I mean, Aquaman 2 wasn't part of the panel, either.

So, unless there is official word, I'm gonna go ahead and call bullshit on this.

That would be another completely insane decision if true... Disney even released New Mutants even though they knew it wouldn't make any money...
 
I have been reading for a while, wanted to chime in while i have a couple of minutes....

the DCFU/TV is such a mess...due to previous management but now with current, in addition to Covid and now Ezra Miller and Amber Heard's issues.


Regarding Super Pets -- it's peak "popularity" was the 60's comics, right? (Which i suspect was more parents buying them for their kids as opposed to fans seeking out those issues). For the last 2-3 generations, there is no real conenction to Super Pets. We certainly haven't seen any of them in any live action, not even Krypto.So it's just kind of random.


I will eventually elaborate in the DCFU/TV vs. MCU thread, but this just feels like such a mess... like Sony. Where WB like SOny seems apparently more for the money and many of us are not feeling the passion for the IP the way Raimi SPider man, MCU and even 1st seasons of Berlanti-verse felt like when they got started.

The stop-starts and disconnections really hurt it as a whole. And its crazy...because they could have started the Film Universe STRAIGHT WITH Justice League, and could have flowed with individual movies and then when streaming blossomed, could have had a set of shows.

The DCFU saga could be labeled "Crises (with an e) on One Earth"
 
I mean, I would definitely take that report with a huge chunk of salt, but at the same time if the new regime has plans for Batgirl that the new film doesn't match they might judge the long-term viability of the franchise to be worth sacrificing the $90M instead of sinking more money into promoting and releasing it and forcing themselves to follow what it sets up.
 
I think it’s highly debatable if there are any “legitimate entertainment news sources” left. There is a history of the online counterparts of the big industry press regurgitating questionable rumors for from other sites that the print versions would never run. Everyone is looking to get views and there is no accountability on wrong information.

I am still waiting for Henry Cavill to appear at Comic Con. Though anyone who did basic research could have discovered he was filming in another country that day.

I find it very hard to believe even WB’s new owners would dump all that money down the drain. Very likely the dubious online entertainment press is trying to create a fictional narrative to fuel more clicks until WB is forced to refute this. Than same sites will cover that and take credit.
 
Whether the Batgirl rumor is true or not, I've been wondering if this WB/Discovery merger is going to have any positive results for anyone except the CEOs.

I just found a Hollywood Reporter article that says the same thing re: Batgirl being shelved, so, unfortunately, this seems to be legitimate.

This is insane. Surely finishing and releasing it would make enough money back to justify the release at least? They apparently finished filming, so I can't imagine that footage is just never used, having a "lost" superhero film in the 21st century is just mind blowing to think about.

The old WB owners did stupid stuff, like wasting over 70 million on the Snyder Cut which apparently didn't end up making them back their investment by whatever standard they use to judge that with streaming releases, but just straight up not releasing a fully filmed movie is bizarre.

Snyder Cut was needed as HBO Max content. They were apparently happy enough with it that they also let him oversee a BvS remaster.
 
Anyway, I think high budget movies like the ones Netflix is making are not good business for streamers, but in THIS case where a movie is already finished? Just release it and do your pivot later. Like Disney did with Dark Phoenix and New Mutants.
