I don't know if a thread like this is anywhere here, but I wanted to share this. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN will be re-released in theaters in September. 4, 5, and 8 will have theaters showing this awesome movie. I just bought tickets for my wife and I for the Thursday 9/8 showing, since I'll be at DragonCon during the other two. I was 3 years old when this came out, so I never saw it in the theaters. I missed the TMP re-release in 2019, and it saddened me. But once I found out about this one, I immediately jumped at the chance to buy tickets! I thought I would share this so everyone can get a chance to see this in theaters... either for the first time, like me, or for a revisit of days of yore.
BTW: my wife and I went and saw Star Trek IV when it was out in theaters a couple of months ago. Great fun.
I am going. And someone who is a, "never TOS, only TNG" type fan for the last 30 years has agreed to go with me! (TBF they also went with me to TMP) TOS Wins again! lol
My wife is also a 'never TOS' person. She has seen all of TNG, DS9 (twice), VGR, ENT, and PICARD, and watched most of SNW with me. She'll never do the animated shows and I know she won't like DIS, and she just can't get past the dated look of TOS. I never pressed because her watching a few episodes of any show was a victory for me, let alone a majority of the franchise. As a married man, you learn to try to never overplay your hand or go for too large a victory. But because of how many times I have talked about TWOK, she was willing to go watch with me. Excitement!!!
Covid doesn't show any sign of going down. And it probably won't this time (before September, anyway), because America at large thinks it's over it. Hospital rates would have to go way up again before state authorities decide it's worth lifting a finger to protect you. I've had to settle on missing the latest Harry Potter; looks like we can probably add Doctor Strange, Top Gun and probably TWOK to the list.
I couldn't see TWOK in the theater in 1982, on account of being a toddler, but I did see it in the theater in 2010 and 2017. Take it from me: it's definitely worth seeing there if you can. There's a bigger difference with TMP, though. The visuals there really POP OUT in All Capitals on the Big Screen. When I saw it that way in the theater, in 2019, it was the first time I really felt like I got what Robert Wise was trying to go for. TV doesn't do the visual scale any justice.
I've had my tickets since they went live - pretty much when I got the DE tickets. I never miss the opportunity to see the first 3 in theaters. Even those this is the directors cut (which I like less) it's a fantastic film and an all around joy.
Having just seen TMP on a screen, I couldn't agree more. The Motion Picture is certainly made for the big screen. All those long, slow passbys are made for audiences to stare and appreciate the details, and they just don't work on a small screen. Khan is a much smaller story in scope, including visual scope. Its conflict between larger-than-life scenery chewers works even on television. Better on a large screen, but not bad on tv. But still, see the thing in a theater. You won't regret it.
Just found this out too and came to post about it! Found this thread. Can not wait!!!!!! Never thought that I would get to see these films in the cinema!
Wait... is TMP coming back to theaters, too? I tried looking for it, but all I could find was previous events that are no longer doable.
Kind of a cool fact- TWOK is playing in the exact same Woburn, MA theater I saw it in when I was 6 years old with my dad. That’s about 1hr and 15min from my house nowadays…but….I may have to consider the nostalgia value of going there.
