Spoilers The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Discussion

Gave us a pretty good "big Trek two-parter" last week and this wasn't a bad go at "Star Wars". There were a couple moments where their reach exceeded their grasp with the FX but not too often. I've always thought of it as a bit of a pretender but I think even the harshest critic has to give credit where its due and I'm impressed especially in these last episodes and think it's really come into its own.

Surprised so many people liked Charlie. Her death did nothing for me. I was more upset about the Asian pilot. Mainly because I saw it coming a mile off. Their Porkins.

By the way, I did like the comedic moment with Bortus trying to crack a nut open. The whole scene was funny. The interaction with Klyden was funny and then Teleya coming in and cracking the nut with her bare hands was a nice finishing touch.

Ok, I will say I LOVE that scene, however at the same time it is the ONE scene that drives me crazy! lol I'm watching it for the third time and just got to that scene and the obvious trick photography (profile of all three, close up of open hand, close hand, open hand, profile shot of Teleya), I do love the scene but I've laughed all three times I've seen it, the wonderful CGI that's through out this series and THAT'S what looks fake.

I'm glad to see Bortus and Klyden back to normal, or at least getting there.

That was a very sad episode. I can’t believe they killed Becker.
I hope for the final episode we get something new, and not another continuation.

Maybe the Admiral will find himself spending the afterlife in The Good Place. Where there is plenty of Hawaiian pizza and frozen yogurt for everyone.

There's an Asian pilot in ROTJ who blows up. lol

Three words: "Egg Salad Sandwich"

They really need to pay this off somehow. lol

If they did bring Charly back, full circle would be Isaac being involved to pay her back and close that arc.

They are going to need a new big name to replace Admiral Danson. I recommend Tim Allen.
Grayson is always mentioning her father. Get him to play him.

I'm still waiting for the promised guest star that is supposed to be a super big name in the scifi world (and is not Bruce Boxleitner). My bet is on William Shatner, but he might not really fit into the role of an Admiral.

What's funny is that everyone is expecting it now. So it might actually subvert expectations if nothing happens and the sandwich does not appear in the finale.

I had another thought. What if the entire finale goes by and nothing and then in the last few seconds of the episode, we pan to a shot of space and the words "3 months later" on the screen and we see the sandwich just floating in empty space, roll credits.

PHEW! They saved Xelaya! I was sad not to see Alara Kitan, but then Xelaya is bigger than Earth.
What surprised me, though, was that we didn't get any of the Xelayan perspective. Think about it, they used a superweapon to protect a planet of pacifists?

I really didn't like or dislike the character, but found her fairly annoying for a while.

She seemed to be added to represent the hatred everyone should have had towards Isaac/Kaylons. The character arc was complete when she forgave Isaac and then sacrifice herself to save the Kaylon.

With Perry's fate, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised that Mercer gets promoted to the Admiralty for all he's helped do. Kelly gets the big chair, and Bortus by her side (in one way or another). That way Mercer gets to spend time raising a daughter, and MacFarlane gets to have a reduced role in any future works while moving on to other projects.

With Perry's fate, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised that Mercer gets promoted to the Admiralty for all he's helped do. Kelly gets the big chair, and Bortus by her side (in one way or another). Well, to that point in the franchise he was the ONLY Asian pilot in the entire Star Wars franchise, and would continue to be until, what? Rogue One? Special guy.

Oddly enough, my daughter wanted to believe he was somehow Nurse Park, who was unceremoniously monsterized earlier this season. There was another Asian guy in medical green in the mess hall scene at the top of the episode, so with the pilot's demise there's hope yet. As it stands both he and the other pilot with on-camera lines died, so it was pretty forgone.

More's the point, how many fighters was Orville carrying? Just the one, or were there more stashed somewhere below decks next to their extra shuttles, with a single fighter kept on "ready five" status should they need someone to heroically jump into one at any given time in order to save the day?

Really enjoyed this one. The side-swapping was a little WWE, I really struggle to see the Moclans teaming up with a female-led society and the Kaylons immediately jumping in with the Union who just forced them into a ceasefire following what was basically a massacre.

And the singsong in the cabin was TNG level deep cringe. And I can no longer tell if Seth's putting it in there ironically or not.

But otherwise it was fantastic. The manatees grabbed from Star Wars as well for the ending battle as well as the usual multitude of ST episode and movie plot points. I was surprised Admiral Ted Danson pulled an Admiral Cartwright, I assumed it was Krill in disguise taking the weapon (which of course they didn't think to duplicate)

The Orville has always struck me as wanting to be "Trek" and you can't be Trek without some cheesy musical moments.
