Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

Regarding RMB, eh as much as I dislike the guy, I'll take his praise as positive. I liked Picard Seasons 1 and 2 a lot, I also like the Berman ear shows, so win win here.

Agreed. I'd have been a lot less worried about season 3 pandering to purists if RMB had said he hated every second of it. That would have meant it's innovative, interesting and takes new approaches with the TNG cast and source material. The fact that he likes it simply means it's TNG season 8, the same old Berman era style, only with better graphics. (RMB even tweeted that they should just re-name things into TNG Season 8.)

I don't think it'll be quite that formulaic, since I really think S3 will still have a fresh spin with the darker/harsher tone from the first season carried over (but reigned in like in SNW) an improved Raffi, and still very popular Seven of Nine thrown in the mix, etc, and movies like The Force Awakens and Top Gun: Maverick are two of the most watchable and successful films in recent years (despite the latter derided as a loose remix of ANH and the latter is literally the mission from Hotshots but played more straight, with vastly better modern budget).

To be fair tho, this return to what TNG was like IS what a large part of the fanbase has wanted from PIC from day one. And has been upset about not getting for two whole seasons. (I still very much doubt they'll be pleased now, though. PIC is still a show written by fanboys, and like I said before, one fanboy's dream is another fanboy's nightmare. They'll find things to nitpick and hate on, I'm sure.)
as the quote from the showrunner above shows, it's still serialized. I don't think it's going to be TNG Season 8 despite was RMB says, but I guess there is familiarity in it.

I'm guessing it's the lore/continuity aspect of the season. Maybe the villain is connected to an event from TNG.

Tomalak? Survived the supernova of 2387 but has been harboring a rage against Picard for the past fourteen or more years? With the Romulan theme to the overall series and not many villains from TNG being memorable Romulans that would be a good option.

Yeah it's not episodic, of course. I think it's probably more like a very long final TNG movie. Also, there's something else RMB said when someone asked him how he can like the third season when he loathed the first two seasons so much, and his reply was basically that "there's a point to be made" that season 3 might nullify the first two. I don't know if he meant that literally or that it was just something in his headcanon but I have a hunch that this supposed "point" plays another huge role in his sudden love for the third season. Bringing the TNG cast back while dumping most of the previously established characters, going back to previous canon to tell a story, a zillion fanboy moments and no "canon violations" AND then, cherry on top, something that enables him to say "the first two seasons never happened"? No wonder RMB is all over it.

A friend just reminded me that he called DSC Season 3 episode 'Unification III' racist. I don't remember the context as to why he thought that, it was too long ago.

Hopefully we get a trailer/teaser tomorrow.

Am I misremembering, or did we get that first teaser around this point last year, during the digital SDCC stuff? The one that hovers over Picard's table and reveals Q's voice at the end.
