Paul Wesley's incarnation of James T. Kirk

It could have been a note the director of the episode gave Paul Wesley

There are WAY too many complaints about acting (in general) that fail to consider the significance of the direction given to the actor. One sample of a portrayal of a role is rarely sufficient to determine whether an actor can do the role justice. I’m willing to see more before passing judgment (I’ll not bother going into detail about the alternate nature of this particular example except to say it adds to my willingness to see more).

I think you and I define "restrictive" differently, especially when I'm saying to to move past the character as re-doing it is the very definition of restrictive.

Free yourself and move past Kirk. Give us Captain New Person with Commander Original Character at their side and let them shine!
Sure. But I won’t stop revisiting plays with different casts. No role is so “iconic” (an overused term) that it cannot be reinterpreted. No story is either.

Would SNW be more or less without Peck's Spock?
Peck as Spock has added a TON to SNW! No doubt about it. Freaking awesome!

I think the idea of recasting Spock was a huge risk though. But they gambled and absolutely succeeded. The bigger the risk the bigger the potential reward I guess.

Perhaps that was part of the genius starting Pike/Spock with Discovery? Reduces some of the risk. If it didn't work in Discovery, they don't do SNW. But it clearly worked so, green light for SNW.

I have to be honest. This guy, this Paul Wesley has it's own acting qualities. And he resembels Kirk really good. But there is one thing that can be a problem. And that is a problem. Name of the problem is: total lack of physical resemblance of Paul Wesley compared with William Shatner..

Maybe some one can turn a blind eye on that, but it is really difficult.

I don't have that problem with captain Pike, because Anson Mount DOES HAVE physical resemblance of Jeffrey Hunter. When I look at Mount I can really feal that he is a Pike. But with total established charachter as Jim Kirk is, when I see Paul I don't have that feeling.

I think here that they should use deep fake or find some other actor that looks more like William Shatner. His facial features, his eyes, eyebrows, voice. Everything is so so so different from Shatner. And I don't like it to be honest once again.

Like I said I don't have that problem with Mount or with Peck. He also is doing a great job as Spock. He looks like Leonard Nimoy and acts like that.

It's Jim Carrey doing a SNL skit.
He just looks odd and his expressions seem limited to his tight lipped mouth.
He Lacks charisma and swagger

Vic Mignonna would make a excellent shatner.

I have seen him and is hugely awesome as shatner and Kirk and this who we should vote for.

why not start on online petition in the same way as for Mount Anson as pike????

I'm not too bothered by Wesley looking physically quite different to William Shatner, but I did find his performance... underwhelming.

There was nothing there that made me think Captain Kirk outside of characters telling us that the character we're seeing is Captain Kirk. I believe but I'm not totally sure that Paul Wesley has said that his performance in season two is closer to the Captain Kirk we see in TOS performance-wise, which is a bit weird but maybe he'll feel more like Kirk there.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but he seems a little old..

I am missing something, aren't I?

I admit there's little or no physical or vocal resemblance between Wesley and Shatner (or Pine). But given a few episodes appearing in the role, it'd be interesting to see if he becomes more accepted. I'd like to see him do that wry sort of grin Shatner did in the role; that'd sell it to me. Ah but it's just a quibble.

There were one or two moments when he reminded me of Season 1 TOS Kirk but yeah, wildly different actor and a Kirk who hasn't been shaped by more than a year as Captain of the Enterprise. Chris Pine's Kirk started out almost a delinquent and then was a womanizer who felt the rules didn't apply to a guy like himself, which just goes to show upbringing and the friends you have along the road of life can greatly impact who you turn out to be.

It's not the destination but the journey!

And even Pine's Kirk turned out to be a lot more like Shatner's by BEY. Similar hair, similar preachiness when lecturing an enemy, same gravitas as Captain.

And get three years into a five-year mission. TOS Kirk changed by the end of his.

Shatners Kirk is a tough act to follow. Kirk is a very iconic character. If this were a reboot I would be less concerned. But it's not and i feel bad for Paul Wesley. He has a tough climb ahead of him. I personally do not see him ever obtaining what Shatner or even Pine did in the role.
