There ye go! I was once told by a native Irishman that Welsh and Gaelic were never meant to have a written alphabet associated with them. They were originally spoken languages only. It was apparently the English need to impose the written alphabet on these languages and wacky-ass names that did not sound like how they were spelled was the result. I honestly believe they made these names out of random letters to perpetually confuse the English if they ever tried to invade and couldn’t read local maps to figure out where they were.
I just saw this thread, and I don't know how much I'm reiterating here, but Rings of Power is just bastardizing Tolkien. First, it's going to have at least a handful of sex scenes--they hired an "intimacy coach". Second, Amazon's saying your racist for wanting Tolkien's world to be Tolkien's world, that is the Middle-earth that is Europe, where Elves and Dwarves and Hobbits are not Black; granted, a certain tribe are hobbits, Harfoots, have "dark skin". Thirdly, they're just making up stories and characters, instead of following Tolkien. It seems they bought Tolkien, because they weren't creative enough to make their own world. As far as I'm concerned, the Tolkien Estate sold out their soul on this. I fear something similar is going to happen with the Buffy reboot ...
No adaptation will ever 'bastardize' its source material because the source material still exists for people to enjoy.
I stand corrected. Perhaps this better conveys my meaning: They're doing what they did to Wheel of Time, but much _much_ worse.
The Wheel of Time TV series, from my point-of-view, actually improves on the novels by making the story both interesting and comprehensible, which is also how I feel about the Peter Jackson Middle-earth films. As far as Rings of Power goes, I'm reserving judgment until after I see the finished product.
Exactly. Many of my family members would never have enjoyed Tolkien without the films. It made it more accessible. Nothing wrong with that.
The Peter Jackson films were masterpieces. I'm talking about the Rings of Power TV show, which wouldn't make anything by Tolkien more accessible, because a) it's not any of his stories, just his world with a little of his lore; they completely made up the plot and characters, based on what we know so far, and b) its not anything in the style of Tolkien (cf. sex scenes, black hobbits/elves/dwarves).
Good. I'll take it. I want adaptations, change and expansion. I don't know why this offends so many. The elitist attitude is frustrating when it finds ways to tell people not to enjoy something.
It has nothing to do with "elitist attitudes" it simply has to do with wanting the series to be like the books. If you want something with a diverse cast, don't look at Tolkien. In every other way, Tolkien is excellent though. Even as a Tolkien geek, I admit that flaw.
Yes ... so he created Harfoots, and Harad. Remember Middle-earth is supposedly an ancient version of Earth. The majority of LotR takes place in the section that corresponds to northern Europe--where scarcily anyone was anything but white in the Middle Ages (the period that inspired him). There's plenty of diversity ... if they look beyond the north of Middle-earth.
And that's where the problem lies. If you approach an adaptation with the mindset that it * has * to be like its source material, you've automatically set yourself up for instant disappointment because the entire point of adapting something is to change the source material in some way.
