Introducing James T. Kirk

I just feel like Sam has a lot that suggests he could get more focus - clearly Pike knows him fairly well (again seen in E9), and the others too. I hope we do get more with him - but I am glad the show has foregrounded other characters more. Too few episodes, overall! I miss 26 episode seasons so much when it has come to this show, but equally I know that the limitations of this season's length have probably helped make it so good (and ensured more budget per ep).

I’m hoping we get to see Sam and James interact in season two. Would love to see what kind of relationship the brothers kirk have

I'd love to see the reason Sam leaves Starfleet.

It probably won't have anything to do with his bro, though. If that had been the case, Jim would have felt even worse over Sam's death, because then he'd feel responsible.

If "Operation: Annihilate!" is any indication, the brothers probably had a close relationship. I ddin't get the vibe that they were estranged or fighting or anything like that.

Well, at some point, Sam meets (or has already met) Aurelan, they get married, and start a family. In the 23rd Century that's an excellent reason to leave the service, since you can't take 'em aboard ship with you.

Or at least put in for shore duty on a colony. Just because Sam wasn't wearing a uniform when we saw his body in TOS doesn't mean he wasn't still in starfleet.

Ahh. I missed the reference, then. I need to go back and rewatch the whole season. You always catch more detail on second viewings.

There's a bit in SNW ("Children of the Comet", I think) when Pike asks Sam "How's the family?" and Sam replies "All fine, sir."

In TOS, Peter looks like he's about 12 years old. Which means he's probably a toddler in SNW. He and Aurelan are almost certainly not on the ship with Sam (otherwise Pike would have met them). They could be on Deneva already..

I don't think Deneva is "home" for Sam's family. Just his current assignment in Operation: Annihilate. He and the family were on Earth when Kirk took command. In WALGMO, Kirk says Sam wanted to be assigned to Earth Colony II.

Maybe in SNW we'll find out about Sam's other two sons, and why they (apparently) weren't on Deneva with the rest of the family.

At first I thought they were killed by the neural parasites just like Sam and Aurelan were, but if that had happened, we'd have known about it.

Pike: Your brother's coming here? The kid who cheated on the Kobayashi Maru? James R. Kirk?

Sam Kirk: Actually his middle name is--

Pike: It stands for "reckless".
