What if it BOMBS

So..what if the very bad happend? What if the movie SUCKS big time. It is possible. How many times have we waited for a so called great movie to come out and it ended up being a mound of turd. For me? Godzilla 1998 was such a movie. I am a Godzilla fan, big time. And when Godzilla 1998 was announced I was so thrilled...but it blew. I know some of you liked it, but for me, the movie was a let down.

I really don't understand the sour grapes people have with the Godzilla movie. I thought it was really good. Maybe people's expectations were just too high.

What if this movie doesn't appeal to us old fart fans, and fails to generate a new 'era'. What do you think would be the effect upon the rest of the franchise. I think it would be a death nail. If it fails on the big screen, no one, not CBS, heck not even CW will touch the TV side of the house.

To state the obvious...EVERYTHING Trek is riding on how this movie performs next may. They....better.....get......it.....right!

SCORPIO!

Don't know if 33 counts as being an old fart, but I think if it bombs box office wise that will be it. Personally I think moving the story forward after DS9 and Voyager with a whole new crew would have been the way to go. But we'll see.

My guess is if this movie does manage to bomb, it will be a long time before we see anything new with Trek. When we do it'll probably be radically different from what we're accustomed to today. From Paramount's perspective, trying to recreate the golden age of TOS didn't work, and the 24th century well had run dry, so why not let loose and just start all over from scratch, reboot it entirely? ANY change will be possible and many changes will be made. So much so the only thing tying the new series or movie to Star Trek that we knew previously will just be the name "Star Trek" and a few vaguely familiar trappings.

Honestly, I wouldn't care that much about a complete reboot as long as it was good. My first choice would be a TV series set in the 26th or 27th century, where it can still be connected to where the old Trek has come from, but there will be more freedom to go where no series has gone before. :)

From a similar, recently locked thread:

That's an unrealistic expectation. Sticking with the same formula has been part of Star Trek's problem. Those behind the scenes have been scared to venture outside Trek's comfort zone to shake up how the show presents itself or tells it stories.

My point is that, with the exception of Trek's one, true spinoff DS9, Star Trek could have been an ongoing series from the beginning. Treat the cancellation of TOS as a hiatus and instead of getting greedy and doing films, stick with Phase II. You could tell the same stories we saw in the movies as TV episodes. And when the cast gets too expensive or bored, you write them out and bring in the next crew member (Data, Worf, Seven of Nine; whoever).

TOS could have segued into TNG very naturally, and the first season of VOY probably would have been better off as an eighth season of TNG. The whole "Lost in Space" premise would have been wonderful as a season-long story arc designed to shake things up and add new characters to the Enterprise.

I guess I just consider Star Trek to be about the voyages of the starship Enterprise, regardless of who happens to be on board.

If Paramount produces a popular, successful film in this Trek XI, you can take it to the bank that most if not all the creative team will be back for another film in about 3 years from release and that includes the main cast. At some point JJ won't want to direct another Trek, just as with the X-Men franchise, Singer moved away but many of the actors remained.

I agree. But since JJ comes from the TV world, and Paramount loves TV stuff, I wonder if they will tap him, if the movie succeeds, to prep some kind of TV spinoff of the movie. I think this would be wrong to do, but you know Paramount..they LOVE to change things

Remember, Paramount doesn't do Trek TV anymore, CBS does. Look at the credits for TOS-R, no Paramount, just CBS.

Say what you will about Abrams' other productions, he's a master at marketing. What he did for Cloverfield was unprecedented in terms of viral marketing.

That said, I think this movie will be financially successful, but I have no idea whether the movie itself will be good.

We'll just have to see it and draw our own conclusions.

Boy, would this forum be so much more quieter if everyone did that! Common sense talk like this has no place here. Begone! ;)

i just dont see this bombing unless it is really horrible.
a lot of people are interested in this who havent been interested in trek for a long time.
