TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

Kirk was a definite jerk in TMP. It seemed like he would have been much better in an advisory role to Captain Decker,
Just make him mission commander. Problem solved.
Pine's Kirk is a much younger Kirk at the start of his career. Shatner's TMP Kirk is practically at the opposite end of that. I agree that they went overboard in some spots, but there's no doubt it was an intentional choice to portray Kirk as a young leader.
And it works extremely well in the context of the story made within Kirk's arc, the story being told and his own struggles. As a character, he makes sense. In TMP, going from TOS, Kirk's weirdly unprofessional behavior towards Decker is so off putting as to feel like a different character at times.
The Star Trek we knew and loved is dead.
No one told me. I guess I'm not part of the "we."

And I consider TOS my first Trek love. But it isn't the only one.
Hey it's a fair question because that never stopped that other star franchise.
Because the original creator was never satisfied with his movies.

Reminds me of old folk who seem to believe the only good television came out in the 60s and 70s, turning their nose up at anything contemporary.

Meanwhile, I’m watching BETTER CALL SAUL blow that theory out of the water.

I haven’t been too enthusiastic about recent Trek, but STRANGE NEW WORLDS has so far been as enjoyable lark for me as TOS was. As far as batting averages go. Cautiously optimistic to see how it goes.

I love new TV. I love old TV. But what I don't love is what they take old TV and trick it up to make it in line with new. Leave it old, enjoy it for what it is.

I take it you don't like current Star Wars or even the currently published edition of the Hobbit? (Yes, even the legendary JRR Tolkien himself changed an entire chapter of the Hobbit to fit in with the later published Lord of the Rings. You won't find the "original" Hobbit anywhere except the annotated edition)

I have no problem with new Star Wars movies. I have a problem with updating the original trilogy to the extent it has been.

I have no experience with the Tolkien books. Just the films.

A LOT of contemporary television leaves me stone cold. A lot of old TV didn’t do much for me either.

Back in the old days we had about twenty channels we got by TV antenna tower. We thought it was great and there always seemed to be something to watch. Now we 500+ channels and I can rarely find anything worth a damn to hold my interest. And that includes SNW of which nothing about it impresses me.

I find new stuff to love and old stuff to love, Trek included. Whenever I hear complaints about new TV I just laugh because I recall complaints around old TV shows. Same complaints with Star Trek. Nothing is new here.

Why would I have an issue with it? Tolkien changed it, Lucas changed it, and so it goes. It's their art not mine.

So apparently the 4K restoration wasn't just a resolution upscale, but there were actual legit changes as seen at 12 Most Fascinating Updates For The 4K ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Directors Edition’ – TrekMovie.com despite Robert Wise having passed away some time ago already.

The 4K DE was never said to be "just a resolution upscale".

The team was the same in 2000 and 2021. They had all of Wise's notes and the new changes made in 2021-22 were things on the "want list" established in 2000.

If they were making changes, why not add in the NX-01 to the lounge scene showing all past ships called Enterprise?

Because it wasn't something Wise had discussed. "Enterprise" didn't premiere until September 26, 2001, after the work was done on his DE.

And there are plenty of fans for the XCV-330.

Why the hell would they do that? That display was not a comprehensive list. Plenty of Enterprises were left out (such as the second aircraft carrier, CVN-65).

Decker said "All those vessels were called Enterprise." He did NOT say "Those were all the vessels called Enterprise."
