and pretty wrong, as there are plenty of emotionally and intellectual challenges in TNG.

No, there really aren't. The vast majority of TNG episodes offer simplistic, pat answers to problems that are in real life quite complex, and justify doing so on the basis of "humanity has evolved." Or they have the "evolved" human characters just dump the problems on the guest stars and then warp away with a self-satisfied "glad-we're-so-much-more-enlightened-than-those-guys!" attitude.

perhaps it’s you who haven’t paid enough attention. ;)

I don’t know if the “internet hate machine” has finally dragged me down and destroyed my optimism— but this episode was dull and muddled — a bit like S2 so far. I actually quite liked S1 (except the ending) but the S2 story is so convoluted at this point, and this episode is what Brandon Sanderson would call “a diversion” — that fails to drive the story forward. We need more Rios though. He’s been the one positive in this season IMO.

I'm playing catch-up here -- I've been on a serious Pathfinder binge for a while and am way behind on my TV -- but I feel compelled to point out that I thought Callis really killed it in this ep.

I've only just watched this episode and think it's the weakest of the season so far.

Can I ask, what was the verdict on the uniform Picard's father was wearing in the counselling session? It looked like a Generations/DS9/Voyager-style uniform, but it had the cuffs of the later TNG films/DS9 seasons. Was that an error? Or are we supposed to believe that it's wonky because of Picard's memory? The colour of the shoulders (blue) tally with sciences/medical, but is there any significance to his rank of commander?
Am I agonising too much over all this detail? :guffaw:

It’s “wonky” because it was a dream. Just like Data having the uniform with grey shoulder while on the D and the D having ten forwards in the wrong location and three bussard collectors instead of two. Seemed clear to me.

It was a dream sequence in a "ready room" which had windows to space on both sides and was clearly made from La Sirena set parts, and populated with model ships from Picard's childhood. The uniform being wrong fits this perfectly.

Fans though just go WRONG UNIFORM  because everything is a mistake and nobody making the show references the complete Star Trek Fact Files. Or whatever.

Fans who go "wrong uniform!" are usually looking for a reason to ding newer Trek shows, rather than the actual context of the show and it making sense in context.

It's like people are waiting and hoping for a violation to immediately jump on. Sounds like a perfectly miserable way to watch a show.

Wow, I didn’t anticipate all of the snarky replies I’d get to this message.

I think it was a perfectly reasonable question to ask if there’d been any discussion on the uniform choice. I’m not sure how you’ve interpreted that as me hating on the show @fireproof78. There was even a self-deprecating line at the end asking if I was obsessing over the detail too much. I suggest you calm down dear.

There was no personal implication at you. I was remarking on a snarky response from Daniel. My discussion was in broad strokes and not intended towards you, or anyone, here.

I wish they would, as I’d love to offload my copy. I can’t believe the money I spent on that stuff, which has served only to gather dust for ~25 years.

i loved reading that as a kid.

By the way, when I was refining the script for my fan film I was struggling to find a good explanation online of how starship headings worked…I opened the fact files and one of the first files in the technical section was on starship navigation, with a clear and concise explanation on how headings work. :)

I thought it was a decent enough episode. I've seen better. I've also seen worse. And I, for one, love seeing STIV/TVH callbacks.

Poor Agnes. First fanatical Romulan cultists, now the Borg Queen.

But does this contradict anything previously established about Picard's mother? I seem to vaguely recall an illusion of her, much older, appearing in an episode of TNG.
