News Yasmin Finney Cast as Companion

The Wormhole

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Variety reports actress Yasmin Finney has been cast as the new Companion, a character apparently named Rose. I guess RTD has run out of names for companions.

I've never heard of her, though according to the article and her IMDB page she's been in a Netflix series called Heartstopper, which I've also never heard of. But hey, I see nothing objectionable to her casting, and look forward to see what she brings to the show.

Let the discussion begin.

EDIT: Er, just checked out the other thread and noticed I may have jumped the gun with assuming she's the Companion. So, ah, disregard this post thread as you wish.

The original casting announcement for this character listed her as a guest lead, so I would imagine she’s just in this special, though they could always decide to bring her back in some capacity.

I posited in the other thread that Rose might be the same Rose, just regenerated.

How? She was human? Or did the vortex/center column/regeneration/magic energy that the Doctor french kissed out of her in "The Parting of the Ways" be the reason for her now having the ability to regenerate? Makes a sort of sense, "The Power of the Daleks" had the Doctor saying that the TARDIS allowed him to (regenerate)... granted, if they ever did a story where villains saw the process and then stole the machine... there's some free story R&D.

I don't suppose you watch General Hospital.

Or "For Your Eyes Only" (1981), where the first trans actress was on screen: Tula (Caroline Cossey).

I mentioned the part where she internalized the time vortex. River was a Timelord due to being conceived in the vortex, so a slim chance it affected Rose the same way.

That, or else RTD is messing with our heads with the name.

Pretty sure Turbo was excited to see a trans actress in DW specifically and doesn’t need a laundry list of other prominent roles for trans performers.

Two is hardly a laundry list, unless you don't have many clothes :nyah:

Donna doesn’t remember anything about her time with the Doctor as far as we know, so there’s no obvious reason for her to name her daughter Rose. And given that Rose is trans, her name is more likely to have been her own choice anyway. Will be interesting to see why she chose it…

Donna almost remembered during the reign of the "Master" race. The memories are still in there. Perhaps Donna just had a subconscious memory of Rose.

Maybe this Rose inherited some suppressed memories from Donna by way of visions or something, and names herself Rose as a result? That seems like something that could happen on Doctor Who. It could be a plot point that she has visions of the Doctor.

Super excited for all upcoming Doctor Who!
