Ncuti Gatwa is the 15th Doctor

Tennant surely, unless people really were that stupid.
People really are.

Also, I think you underestimate the level of love Tennant gets, not just as The Tenth Doctor, but as an actor and a human being in general.

What movie is that gif from? It looks very familiar but can't place any of the actors? Sorry gif distracted me.

I remember reading parts of the script for that episode and there was one scene where Chibnall wrote "Cut to the Doctor's growing horror" about four times. That's why I don't blame Whittaker for the quality of her acting. She's just playing what's on the page, which is bad.

Dear god. Should have at least given her a scale of horror. Say, ‘level one — you realise yous signed a three year contract’ ‘level two — when you realise it says three seasons not three years’ ‘three — and the guy in charge takes many years to get to the shooting bit’ all the way to level ten, ‘it’s me, it’s Chris, I will be writing all the big stuff…’
;)

Seriously though, that is a bit hackish.

I'm not sure you're allowed to have a nuanced take on the Chibnall era.
I don't think anyone's allowed to have a nuanced take on pretty much anything any more. What a time to be alive.

(I agree with all your post, but just had to comment on that bit in particular.)

Hopefully they'll go back to platonic companions once in a while.
I hope they go back to platonic companions, full stop. Plenty of "emotion" to be explored there, rather than repetitive "companions pining over the Doctor" tedium.

There's nothing wrong with a platonic or even asexual Doctor either. The character's not the actor anyway.
QFT.

Maybe even Hugh Grant.
Whoever invented that rumour is a complete idiot. What an utterly grotesque choice he would have been. :barf2:

I wish it had been phrased more clearly but here's an interesting comment from Moffat in the new Radio Times.

That's very interesting. I get his point but for me the worry is that the budget has always been one of the areas that added to Who's appeal. It feeds into the quirkiness and eccentricity and it. If anything Chibnall Who often looked more expensive than what came before it, but that just highlighted the hollow nature of the writing most of the time. Those new lenses really made the screen seem empty sometimes. So a big budget is fine, but it has to go hand in hand with the writing/directing etc.

I know I'm going to regret this, but why exactly? He's grown as an actor the last few years, playing a disgraced gay MP, an honest to goodness psychopath and arguably one of the greatest comedic villains of the modern era in Paddington 2. He has range and screen presence. His days of only playing foppish romantic leads or cads are well behind him now (and to be honest even when he was playing those characters he did them with panache).

Fair enough if people don't like him, but grotesque's the kind of word I'd reserve for the Jimmy Savilles, Harvey Wesinsteins and Bill Cosbys of the world.

Fair enough if people don't like him [...]
I suppose I don't, really - with the exception of his role as Ferrars in Sense and Sensibility, where he was surprisingly unannoying. I agree that "grotesque" was probably over the top as a descriptor - and "utterly" was as poor a choice - but even so, there's no way I could take him seriously as the Doctor. When I first ran across that rumour I couldn't imagine who on earth could possibly have thought it was a good idea, and I still can't. Each to their own.

I've never been the biggest fan of the companion wuvs the Doctor trope, but it's not like it's an unrealistic storyline. You have the Doctor often as an attractive individual, on top of this they have a huge amount of confidence and they can take you anywhere in space and time. Why wouldn't you be swept off your feet by the Doctor?

What gets me is the reverse, the Doctor falling in love with a regular person. I get the novelty angle, the seeing the universe through their innocent eyes, but frankly there's something creepy about a 900 year old man having feelings for a 19 year old!

This. It was one thing to see Rose dribbling over the Doctor like an adolescent (especially after being an actual person the previous season). Seeing the Doctor dribbling over Rose like an adolescent...words fail me. (The fact she ended up with her very own Doctor-lite / animated blow-up doll...gah. Just gah.)

As for how realistic it may be...I must have a look for the post but I seem to recall someone here claiming that no one would travel with the Doctor unless they were in love with him / her. It was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen posted here (and that's a very crowded field). It's entirely possible that companions would fall for the Doctor but it's every bit as likely they'd be thrilled with the "anywhere in space and time" thing. New Who's "companions in wuv with the Doctor" is very much a trope for mine, and a not very interesting one at that. (The Sarah Jane retcon was simply awful.) It would be great to have a break from it. But again, each to their own.

Both of these are wonderful but I have to say that I need that Van Gogh TARDIS waistcoat that Syl has hanging up in the foreground!

Rats. :(

Agreed 1000%.

I'm not really sure why we're talking about companions falling in love with the Doctor like it's a regular thing. As far as I can tell, the only ones who definitely loved the Doctor in That Way were Rose, Martha and Yaz, and in the case of Yaz that's only been officially acknowledged within the show itself in the most recent season and the specials. The only other ones that come close would be Clara, though that was more a mutual attraction between her and the Eleventh Doctor that went away when he regenerated and Jack, though that seemed more an extension of his playful flirting with everyone. Maybe Sarah Jane, though that was more a retcon done after the fact in School Reunion. I guess there's River, depending on whether you count her as a proper companion or not.

The adverse reaction that certain parts of Who fandom have to the idea of romance between the Doctor and their Companions doesn't make any sense to me.

Also, River Song is officially considered a Companion.

Don't forget early episodes with Amy. She almost attacked 11 so he had to go get Rory to remind her of their love.
