Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

They say that every single time :D

Yeah, it's always "the best villain", "the best performance", "this will be the best Star Trek season ever", "we have come up with the best story", "the writers were amazing", "we can't wait for you to see it", yadda yadda yadda. Same basic tune, just different melodies.

I mean they're literally under a contract to say all that stuff, so... I can't fault them. I mean Sir Patrick was once asked why he said Nemesis was the best TNG movie ever at the time when he's now on record for saying that it's definitely NOT the best TNG movie ever, and he flat out said "I lied". It's just show business - a contract to star on a show or a in a movie always includes promotional activities, and if you don't want to get sued you had better promote what you're doing according to your contract, and promote it with the appropriate words. ;)

Well they’re not going to respond with ‘my god, what a load of crap’ are they?!

They could. Once. But after that they'd probably never find work anywhere in the industry again. Or at least have immense difficulties with that because the big studios would think more than twice about hiring them. ;) (Unless they're super popular, of course, THEN this sort of behavior would fall under "art" and "extremely eccentric".)

Ugh, that’s disappointing. I like the series, but geez they could have done so much more with the characters.
I think Jurati was pretty well fleshed out. I think we know a lot more about her after 20 episodes that we ever did about Uhura or Sulu. I feel sad she's leaving, but I do believe that Terry wants a proper TNG send off, he really wants a focus on the 7 original actors/characters. I think most of PIC's cast will be sidelined in S3, and as I'm a nostalgia-nerd, I'm not really that bothered by it...

Wow, the Picard FB fanpage is being BOMBARDED by hater posts today…. Did they secretly conspire to collectively ‘spread the hate’ today………??

Can you imagine if PIC was actually being written and produced by TNG writers. It probably still wouldn't live up to expectations (whatever they are) and it would be those writers getting the backlash instead of the current ones. "Why have they brought back the old writers, this series needs fresh blood" etc.

Reminds me of a similar situation just now involving the Monkey Island game series, it was recently announced that the original creator of the games is creating the 6th entry in the series (after only working on the first two), which fans have been lobbying for years, but once it became clear that the game wouldn't be what certain areas of fandom expected, the abuse started.

The moral of the story is: there just ain't no pleasing some folk.

For these people, it's not enough that the old writers come back. They have to provide exactly what they wrote 20-30 years ago, because these viewers wouldn't accept anything less than the Star Trek they remember, no matter how skewed or rose-tinted those memories are. They don't want new and challenging stories or new perspectives, they want to recapture the familiarity and comfort the Star Trek they grew up with had provided.

Given the hit/miss ratio of TNG, there would be approximately a 1/3rd chance of an excellent season, a 1/3rd chance of mediocrity, and a 1/3rd chance of total shit.

Which I think shows the issue with serialization honestly. If you don't get it right, it spoils a whole season, while you can still have individual excellent episodes in a non-serialized season that hold up well on their own.

It's not surprising considering where we're heading this season (Although if they go back to the moment on the Stargazer there could still be a Jurati from the original timeline). There has also been speculation that Rios isn't returning based on his social media posts. I'd be surprised if we see Soji and if Elnor is alive again he'll presumably be a cadet so may not have much to do either. A part of me is disappointed because I really like the cast and feel like they didn't get their chance to be in a truly outstanding story together. Not saying it's bad or good, but the show kind of feels like it ended up being 3 separate miniseries rather than a connected TV show

I don't think those complainers also realize that those writers have talked about constraints they were under at the time and when given the freedom would do something different. Also, Ron Moore's current show (For All Mankind) gets complaints from the usual folks about being "too woke" so it would just be more of the same from those vocal complainers.

From one of the season 2/3 writers:

"This week marks the finale of S2 of #StarTrekPicard. Looking back, it was an absolute pleasure working with Akiva Goldsman to realize his vision. Looking forward, it’s the thrill of lifetime working beside
@TerryMatalas
and the original cast to craft our thrilling & emotional S3."
