Spoilers Is Picard season 2 a failure?

Also, from a Q/Test/Trial perspective, it all seems rather superficial so far. He changed the timeline by convincing Renee she wasn't cut out for it. Picard told her she was so Renee changed her mind...and then??? That's it? (I know the season isn't over)

Exactly.

What does the story in episodes 3-8 have to do with "the trial never ends" or "the end of the road not taken" or "lost in the wake of Picard's fear" or "changing in the way that matters" or "forgiveness" "atonement" or "penance"?

All these story elements that were set up in E2 are not present.

What does Picard have to apologize for in the first place? Didn't he do an apology tour already in S1?
What does he need to atone for?
Penance for what?

Let's look at how little importance some of the character's have had to the overall plot since they arrived in 2024:

Rios: Injured in a clinic, arrested, then escaped, right after that went to a party and had a good time - had no influence on the mission to help Renee, after the party he took Picard to a clinic where he started falling in love with the clinic Doctor. Took the doctor to his ship so she would believe he was from the future. (episodes 3-8)
Seven/Raffi: Tried to find an alien signal. Didn't. Then tried to find Rios. Couldn't. Stole a police car and found his location in the car's computer. Let Rios go. Went to a party and did nothing - had no influence on the mission to help Renee, Tried looking for Agnes. Found out she was the Queen- fought her and lost. (episodes 3-8)

I don't understand how people can think that this is great writing.
You have to be a true Star Trek fanatic who reflexively likes anything that is branded "Star Trek".

I would still have to give it a grade of incomplete. I need to see the final episodes first. Why? If they stick the landing then I could binge this show in the future and have the good first 3 episodes and the final two to balance it out with the lesser episodes being shorter for the most part anyway. I also think that this show would do better binge watching than presented week to week.

I certainly am disappointed though. The show started out very strong. I rated the first two episodes a 9 on imdb and the 3rd an 8. For me the writing on some of the middle episodes has been of lesser quality. The pacing also has felt off in the middle episodes. Having said that its not over yet!

I have been underwhelmed with it. Overall the has show has been Meh. First Picard gets replaced by a Robot and now Q is dying..

Seriously though the shows biggest problem is that it's trying to tell a 2 or 3 episode story spread out in 10 episodes. The pacing is awful and its just plain boring...was really looking forward to Q's return and We get this boring crap. I can see why they decided to put the entire TNG crew next season. I bet it was to please Stewart whom is rumored not to be too pleased with the show..

Oh well new trek has been a dismal failure in my eyes. Disjointed and like a ship without a rudder. At least Star Wars has been awesome....

On my end, I think it's a nice antidote to the first season's excessive darkness and grittiness. People were expecting some sort of grim fascist analysis but while it has social commentary, it's really just one enormous homage to Star Trek IV from beginning to end. Arguably Back to the Future as well with huge amounts of optimism and goofy humor as well as romance.

I had a huge amount of fun and by the time they had a sudden karoake night of Pat Benetar SUNG BY THE BORG QUEEN, I was officially grinning from ear to ear.

I think I prefer the first season for world building and could play an RPG game in that place but this is just fun.

I feel weird because I feel the season as a whole as been somewhat disappointing when I think of it as a cohesive unit, but I’ve enjoyed almost each individual episode. For example I liked 2.8. I have some criticism about how it fits into the season’s narrative as I noted above, but I enjoyed it as an episode of tv.

Source for this or just made up?

Bullshit. Source?

I can’t be sure, but I think I may have found the source of that tidbit:

Stuff That Never Happened magazine said:
Rumor has it that Sir Patrick Stewart is unhappy with Picard, the show he’s the star of, and an Executive Producer since day one on, and which he’s in large part dictated the tone of. Because…reasons.

I've noticed that with the credits, but this seems odd to me. Was there some turmoil behind the scenes that led to a new writing staff? Just weird they would get rid of the season 1 writers and hire writers who don't have much experience instead. The following writers did not return for season 2: James Duff, Nick Zayas, Samantha Humphrey, Ayelet Waldman, and Chabon did not write or co-write an episode - just has one early story credit.

Also, according to articles and interviews the season 2 story was broken down by March 2020, but they were still writing for the season when filming started in February 2021. Since they were going to start filming in June 2020 before the pandemic, the story breakdown they had in March 2020 had to have been after Matalas was already on board and the time travel story was already planned (Since Chabon has a story credit for 2.2 it seems like the Confederation plot was always part of the plan).

My question is, what happened in between the story being complete in March 2020 and February 2021 when filming started? They had a whole year to work on the scripts and it seems like they still hadn't settled on what they were going to do (With Goldsman stating that he didn't know if they had learned their lessons from season 1 and writing still taking place during filming).

It's not uncommon for there to be numerous changes in the writers rooms between seasons of shows particularly during early seasons. If we even just look at Star Trek series, pretty much every show since TNG has turned over its writing staff in the early seasons. Usually this is indicative of politics behind the scenes and other factors. I think the mixed critical & fan reaction to the first season plus Matalas coming in as a the new show runner may have led to the change over.

They may have had the first story broken down by March 2020 but that didn't involve writing scripts and the first draft of any story is not going to be the last. And TV shows are always reworking scripts up to (and sometimes after) filming.

The truth is, we won't really know the full story about what happened behind the scenes until years from now just like the behind the scenes drama on the Berman Trek shows have really only come out in the last decade and a half.

On a boring, strictly numbers basis: the average rating I gave PIC Season 1 was an 8.7 while the average rating I've given to PIC Season 2 so far has been an 8.25.

Chances are, when all is said and done, I'll probably land on ultimately saying I like the first season better. But will I think the second season is a failure? Not even close.

Different numbers have different value to different people.

PRO S1 - 7.9
LOW S2 - 7.9
PIC S1 - 7.6
DIS S2 - 7.5
DIS S1 - 7.5
LOW S1 - 7.5
PIC S2 - 6.8
DIS S3 - 6.7
DIS S4 - 5.5

Like here are the IMDb ratings for each of the modern seasons. People here don't seem keen on IMDb scores; they've got a decent number of votes but you get users voting 1 to try to tank the scores. Despite that Picard season 2 is doing fine. It's in the lower third of the seasons, but it's basically scoring 7.

PIC S1 - 8.3
PRO S1 - 8.1
LOW S2 - 8.0
DIS S2 - 8.0
DIS S1 - 7.8
LOW S1 - 7.7
DIS S3 - 7.7
PIC S2 - 7.6
DIS S4 - 7.5

Here are the TrekBBS numbers. A smaller sample size, but fewer haters participating presumably. Picard season 2 is in the lower third again, but it's 0.1 points below Lower Decks, so I think it's fair to say that general opinion isn't considering it to be a massive failure.

LOW S2 - 8.0
DIS S2 - 7.8
LOW S1 - 7.7
PIC S2 - 7.6
PIC S1 - 7.5
DIS S1 - 7.5
DIS S3 - 7.1
DIS S4 - 7.1
PRO S1 - 6.5

And finally the most important numbers of all, the ones that really matter. These are my scores and they put Picard season 2 in the upper half of the modern seasons! Personally I wouldn't call any of these seasons a failure, not even Prodigy down at the bottom. Room for improvement though.
