Generally Paramount/CBS discs are region free, you do get the odd one isn't but I have multi region player. I also rip all mine to a NAS and it's really easy to get rid of region coding that way.

That's it exactly. Steel books are nice packaging, but not worth the the extra price.
I liked how it was done back in the day, where steel books were just done as exclusives to places like Best Buy or Future Shop or whatever, and were the same price as the regular. Sure, under those circumstances, I gladly bought the steel book.
I got the steelbook version of Into Darkness, but it came with a USS Vengeance and it happened to be at WalMart IIRC. So as much convenience as the desire for a special edition.
The Blu-ray is up for pre-order at Amazon.com for $37.99.
I hope the don’t stop the steelbooks for Discovery.
I wouldn't put anything past anyone at this point. The Orville got a DVD release, but no blu-ray. The Star Wars series' have had no physical releases at all.
Blu-ray was supposed to be the media of the future, supplanting the DVD, but it hasn't quite happened yet. I'm a little surprised myself. I reckon if was as big a media change as VHS-to-DVD was and you needed a separate player, the DVD might have been dead by now.
My Hillbilly relatives are getting restless. They cannot get streaming services in the Hollers so they depend on me to send them DVD season sets, and it's been a long time.

Picked up the DVD set at Target yesterday (as I said in another thread). Saw "Strange Energies" last night.
