Vengeance/Avenger. Is there a real difference?
Semantics? Avenging sounds more justice seeking than vengeance, which has connotations of seeking to hurt someone who hurt you to get even and then some.

I tend to ask the dictionary.I suppose it depends who you ask.
True! But, one would hope that the name would make sense in the history of the ship as part of the service. Kind of like United States Marines receive a basic understanding of the Corps history. There is a certain level of pride that goes in to that process and training. The TMP Enterprise actually does a good job with that in showcasing the ships named Enterprise. I would hope most Starfleet vessels would have that.
Choosing names for things is so tricky, because what/who/where/when we value changes for various reasons. You almost need to put a disclaimer on the starship's name plaque, explaining what it is about the person/place/thing is being celebrated.
Ask a Spanish speaker and the name is " Vengador". Italian "Vendicatore". French "Vengeur"I suppose it depends who you ask.
A terrible name is the USS Omaha Nebraska.

But they walked right into one with the USS Yamato. Sternbach has explicitly said he doubted it was named after the ship in Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers.
Other problematic names include multiple IJN vessels: Akagi, Kongo, and Musashi among them. Also the Crockett, Gandhi, and (possibly) Columbia.
Oh I like long and overwrought starship names like that. I always forget which book series it is, but there's a fictional universe where all the ships are named like that "The Ends Of Invention" and stuff like that.
Edit: It's the Culture books by Iain M. Banks
I dunno, is USS Vengeance really any worse than a lot of British ship names? HMS Indefatigable, HMS Onslaught, HMS Conqueror, HMS Revenge, HMS Victorious, HMS Invincible... Including HMS Vengeance (S31), a Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarine that carries the Trident nuclear missile.
