AND. THAT. GODDAMN. TUXEDO. ARGH. *flips table* I swear those TNG/PIC Trek costume designers knew/know EXACTLY where my weaknesses lie when it comes to Jean-Luc (and Sir Patrick).
I'm normally not into Youtube videos about him (they tend to be badly researched and/or done by the usual hateful nerd suspects nowadays), but this one is really good. It's based on a recent article. If you want to learn more about Sir Patrick and the way he thinks, this is a good place to start. (Just ignore the clickbait-y title.)

I've watched both shows endlessly, and I have no idea what Sir Patrick could have seen in Red Dwarf that reminded him of TNG at all. I realize there was very little sci-fi on the TV in the late 80's, but c'mon!
I've never watched Red Dwarf (I'm not a sci-fi fan) so I can't comment regarding the specifics, but some people speculate about his possible motivations here.
