It’s a television (and sometimes movie) franchise that’s going down new paths because the old ones have been gone down way too many times. Not a favorite grandma who died.:shifty:
Are people not allowed to criticize what they take issue with? Doesn't mean they hate everything. We're like sports fans going back and forth about some old team past its prime but showing glimmers of rejuvenation. Besides, look at the timeframe between the last few series and the previous bunch.

1966-1986 2 series (20 years)
1987-2005 4 series (18 years)
2017-2022 6 series (5 years)

It's too much Star Trek for their negative minds to come up with new things to complain about. These people have limited bandwidth.

My questions & comments as I watched Star Trek: Picard season 2, episode 7 in real time. Thank you in advance for your time, and I encourage all comments.

**SPOILERS**

blahblahblahsnip

18) And then without any reason whatsoever, Raffi suggests she wants to rekindle her "main attraction" relationship with Seven. A relationship we've never seen. A relationship we don't care about. A relationship we cannot possibly be invested in. A relationship that seems to exist for no reason other than to produce some of the worst situational dialogue between two characters I've ever seen in any Star Trek. Suddenly I'm thinking is it possible the writers are having a meta moment here? Do they want more of us to "quit the gang"?

19) Seriously could there be any other two characters in the history of television with less chemistry than these two!?

20) Raffi is actually chipper for once. Seems odd given that Elnor's barely cold corpse is only a couple dozen feet from her, but sure, talk about growing old Raffi.

21) Seven is shocked when her console shuts down. Again, this likely could have been avoided had she stayed behind from the fundraiser...

22) These two geniuses quickly figure out the Borg Queen has duped them, which given the incompetence of these characters, doesn't seem like a tall task to be honest.

23) Characters state that without ship they'll never find Ag-borg. Again, even if this were true (it's not, we literally just saw you figure it out with Rios) then maybe you two geniuses should have followed Jurati at the fundraiser. Especially since she is the least qualified amongst you to be left alone on a mission like this. But oh right I forgot you're incompetent.

24) Raffi says this ship is their only way home. Really? Not the omnipotent being called Q? Mmmkay. Also, maybe if you weren't written to be incompetent you'd have stayed behind on it to ensure something this contrived would never have happened.

25) Watcher again. About to "mind-meld" (her words, not mine) with Picard. And because the show thinks we're absolutely stupid people, she's literally wearing something ridiculous that evokes a Vulcan's ear. Are you actually kidding me show. Do you think we are so stupid that we need a visual design to connect the dots of what Vulcans do when they mind-meld, and what this Not Laris character does now? I'm so embarassed. I'm so embarassed that this is what Star Trek is today. A metal device that just so happens to look like a Vulcan's ear. Right before she's about to do a mind-meld - again her words. What's next?? If she wants to headbutt anyone will she whip out a helmet shaped like a Klingon's ridges?? God dammit is this show ever stupid.

26) Rios closes a set of blinds. Is someone there now? Are they not worried that employees are going to start freaking out when they discover a nearly dead old man on the premises!?

27) Not Laris says she's into leaps of faith which seems to be completely counter to what Watchers actually do. It also seems to be a poorly written excuse to keep the writers from explaining this nonsense.

28) Knowing that she is jumping into a dream world Not Laris seems surprised that she jumps into a dream world.

29) Dream Picard again. None of this is real so honestly? Who cares. But I still find it odd that Dream Picard would be surprised to learn that Starfleet wouldn't have psychologists employed? (Don't tell me they blew up Mars too! lol)

30) Did Dream Psychologist just say, "John Luke"?

31) Not Laris walks down an corridor while several soundbites of vastly superior Star Trek episodes can be heard. The irony is not lost on me.

32) Not Laris seems scared for her physical well-being despite this being a dream world. Is a dream world mind that's practically comatose really a "sober" mind...?

33) Dream Picard, Junior Edition is a whinging little guy isn't he? Are they really going to try and convince us that the 94 year old synthetic android, who has achieved more than any other human being and battled through more than any other human being, is really traumatized from his guilt association with Momma Picard? FML are we really and truly expected to believe any of this implausible nonsense?

34) He did! He did say "John Luke"!

35) Except now he IS saying Jean Luc. What the actual what, man lol

36) Monsters attack Dream Not Laris, and honestly? Who cares.

37) Rios allows 2024 doctor to walk in on Picard and white eyed Not Laris because he is incompetent.
PART TWO...

38) There is absolutely no reason why Picard, Rios, and Not Laris shouldn't have also transported back to the La Sirena. This is stupid, sloppy, lazy, and incompetent writing.

39) Gee I sure do hope that is happening to Renee Picard right about now. Be so ironic if a Watcher wouldn't be there to witness or stop Renee from choking on a chicken bone at lunch while in quarantine or something. I guess that's that "leap of faith" she's rolling on about! Not like a guy didn't just try to murder her last night. Seriously how hilarious would it be if new board member Soong, feeling even more desperate, insisted on meeting the star quarantined astronaut, threatening to pull his funding if he didn't wish her off. Maybe a note from Renee's shrink that it would do her well to get such a prestigious send off from the totally not discredited doctor. And once alone with Renee new Europa board member Soong could infect her with some undetectable pathogen that will kill her in, say, two more days. You know? That's almost as dumb as what we've been getting. lmao

40) Face of "Monster" is purposely blurred so that the show can pretend there is tension leading up to a reveal. Literally this creative team is so uncreative that they are just repeating this same trope from the first episode and the stupidly hidden Borg Queen.
18) It certainly would be cool to see them down to two to do more with 7 and Raffi. Like, 7 decides she can no longer work for Rios and instead be on a team with Tallinn, since they already agree on most things. Oh, there's a glimmer of hope. Meanwhile, Rafi returns to Vegas and is confronted by two gangsters who are acting on behalf of the wrong guy, who is played by Donnie Osmond, and he decides to call the cops on himself while 'Soldier of Love' is playing the entire time. Borg queen is dumb enough to think that these guys are shady drug dealers that would willingly cause trouble for Rios and they shoot it out with ninjas and uzis. hey remember that time that you called Raffi a 70's hooker because she's of mixed ethnicity and that's what her hair is like? I do. I just want to make sure everyone else remembers that time you got really racist about the hairstyles of women of color when you discuss Rafi.

19)You're like a content generator that gets paid by the bullet point. You don't even have a point with this one. You said it already. This pointless reply to your pointless bullet point has more of a point. "." there's another one.

20)Remember that time that you called Raffi a 70's prostitute because of her ethnicity ? Peperedge Farm Remembers! And so does the goddamned forum, punk.

21)There was a little boy who liked to make up stories about his toy train set.

He made the train sound so interesting, and with no one around to tell him that it was an illusion, he had no reason to disbelieve his own stories.

This is how I imagine The Illusionist to be - a man who could convince you he was anything, even though his train was just an illusion and he had no special powers to play along with.

According to Clive Barker's Hellraiser comic, Pinhead was someone who had given up on his beliefs and had just done whatever it took to survive.

In my mind, this means that even if Pinhead didn't kill, he'd torture whoever he could to break them before he'd kill them. Much like reading your shit.

He doesn't like killing, as we already saw from his appearance in Hellraiser he doesn't like reading your "I woulda wrote it this way." you even make Pinhead sad.

22) These two characters were duped by the Borg Queen, and she escaped Picard and the rest of the crew. But, this mission was not without results: even though Tasha was captured by the Borg, she turned out to be a brilliant engineer. The guy never would have learned how to run his own ship! He used to be a spy! Tasha's knowledge and expertise would prove helpful on the NX - 01. The Borg Queen was the one who destroyed the game in the bar. She wasn't sure why she did it, but I guess she wasn't sure why she started playing in the first place, either.

23)People are unsatisfied with television writing and want to make up their own shows. They have an interest in Star Trek fandom and believe their experiences in life have given them untapped talent. Many of these people are fans of Star Trek. So here we have a solution to get these fans out of the basement, make them the stars of their own shows, and not have to worry about ever returning to the basement! But in order to do this, we need to understand how TV writing works, how series scripts are written, and why and how we can start working towards a solution to this problem.

Another way of looking at the problem is to ask the following question: How many of our writers are fans of Star Trek? How many of our writers grew up watching Star Trek, and this resulted in them becoming the experts they are? How many of our writers have actually sat and watched Star Trek episodes? I am not a fan of Star Trek. I never watched the original series, I’ve only seen a couple of episodes of Voyager, and my friends have never seen a Star Trek episode in their entire lives. But I am a fan of people. I believe everyone has a story to tell, and all I am asking for is a chance. A chance to tell my story, and a chance to be seen.

This is an important point to realize, that we are going to need writers for the projects.

24)Why do you think you are a stupid person? Do you wish you could communicate by telepathy? Can you weld a mind? Why are you embarrassed? Is it regarding about your strange, sexually-oriented body parts? What is the proper etiquette for reacting to someone when they are in the grip of erotic agony? Do you feel that all of your friends should be? Do you not understand that you can communicate with your cat? And how you can communicate with an intelligent butterfly. Do you remember the butterfly? Wasn't he a beautiful butterfly? Did you care?

25)I'm willing to fight.
Love can be so heartless when you turn out the lights,
A mutual surrender in the heat of the night.
Life's an empty picture when you're living alone,
Well, maybe that's the reason every heart needs a home.
Each time I fall down, I get on my feet again.
I'm gonna win this battle in the end.
-Donnie Osmond, Trek Fan

26)It’s warm enough now, but the bar and lounge is still almost empty, and now he’s worried that someone might show up soon and spot him, stand on the elevator and make the situation even more difficult. He gives up. A good day for him. The guy who lives above him appears at his open door and closes it behind him. He’s carrying a small purple leather backpack.

27)You seem to have preset ideas and want every single thing to go your way. This says a lot more about you then you have given any sign of showing. But you have subjected us to your subconscious messages which are what you are stuck with at present. You are also stuck with your present attitude.

It is not your mind that is in control it is your ego that has taken over and is telling you how things are for the time being. As long as you persist in forcing your own realities on the situation you will keep getting exactly what you want or are given. This is not what is going on.

28)Eurika explained that Tallinn was captured by the monster and soon afterwards the dream world's creator, Xenobia, arrived and captured her. She was told she must watch her dreams but because of her failure to do so, the monster broke free and turned her into stone. She was later found by Snow. When Snow wanted to reawaken her, Eia disagreed because she wanted to be forgotten.

29)Just before she died at the hands of a george washington android, she was in the midst of a campaign to stop him from having his property seized by the government. She wrote and directed her husband Mr Rios to go into the city, where she had a number of friends. He came on the train and, as he was going, heard that many of them had died. On the way, he came across a monster, and, when he got from the dream to the store, saw a man on board coming with a large body. He was the admiral. He said, "I see two white men, and I fear I can kill one of them." And they said, "Take off his coat." He told them, "We have a plan and we will go and collect them immediately." She wrote, "If I could have killed them by taking off one coat and dreamrying them on a train, I could have put all on the train with you, we could have been on the way to Los Angeles, and you could have put more on the train." The second messenger, in turn, said, "That is not in the way, the boy is lying. There is a woman in a dream with some boys; she has been arrested in a public place. I have a little girl in the dream who was in the dream with the second messenger." And he said, "Now is her turn to say something. She is in our neighborhood, in the neighborhood.

30)Does it matter how we pronounce, say, a”b”? Is a”c” the right”n”? Is ”d” the ”h”? We stopped using “twigs” when one of our hard-to-pronounce neighbors pointed out that any thin twigs that are trimmed from a tree are in fact called French words? Is it Jean or John?

31)You're a young android, and you're not ready for it. You have a soundbite to look forward to, but you know that you also have to believe in you and make it happen. There's only one person who can help you take it the right way. You, the young android. And if you take it the right way, you're on the right path. And that means giving everything you have to offer to your community, and to the community you represent and your community, because all of you, whether you're new, a veteran of this service, a parent with a job, a friend and mother, don't have the freedom of choice to choose what you choose to do with your life. And if you take it the wrong way, you're not going to see your future grow. And that's why in this moment, we're talking about you. We're talking about the next chapter in our journey to a brighter future. We don't see a savior, and we don't see a world where there is any solution to this problem. We're talking about a long-term vision that we hope is sustainable and that's something that we hope we can take to the next stage. The goal we want to achieve here is one that recognizes the long-term future and a pathway to prosperity for people around the world. We want to empower our community to change.

32)Why don't you just write your own goddamned episode and post it in the FanFic topic? you clearly have a plethora of ideas.

33)My invention is named "Morphometry," in which the first image of my concept is shown in a circular motion without taking a picture. However, as I was trying to visualize my system by the time I got to the second image I could not even visualize my body in a circular motion. I went ahead and applied the same formula in order to create a very interesting diagram. A diagram on the right of the illustration showed what I was trying to visualize. As you can see it looks like I'm attempting to move my brain while I am moving my body. My concept of the concept of morphometry is called the "Morphoscope," a term I use to describe the image I am trying to visualize. My idea for the concept of a morphoscope was born from a simple question I asked in my talk. I'm talking about how I am seeing different colors in an image. What I was trying to visualize is how I perceive the color of the background, how I imagine it as it moves into the background in any given direction.

34)you mentioned it already. like the time you said women with African ancestry looked like hookers because of their hair.

35) In 1835 scientist at the Lucerne Institute for People Who Have Nothing Better To Do But Go On And On About The Same Things Over and Over Again Because It Fills A Hole In Their Wretched Existance While Making Them Feel More Worthy Somehow succeeded in splitting a hair using advanced razor and magnifying glass technology. The hair was then boiled into a tea and drank by someone who had perfected smelling his own index finger for several decades.

36)When I was little I wanted to be a monster. I wanted to be a monster. I was in high school and a little older then I was. I just got my first big break and got in. I looked up to my admiral and said, "Hey, what's up? I want to be a monster. I want to be a monster on the big stage." "When I got my first big break, I was in middle school and I met my older brother who made wine. I was always worried he wasn't going to be good. I told him I didn't want to get married and have a kid. Then a year or two later he came and asked me about it." "At the end of the day, my father decided, 'you need to do everything that you can to save your mother's lives,' and put me in the cellar." The way he dealt with this moment changed him. He was a little bit older then. He was a kid who was a bit of a risk. He wanted to be a bigger kid. He wanted to show his brother the world. And he was willing to do it. So he did. "I still think that's my goal. When I was a kid, I had a few friends that did everything that I wanted to do, but it had to be done together. So I wanted to be one of those guys, and I would be a good mentor.

37)Maybe you should find whatever white shining show with no one making mistakes or having a plot that you might enjoy. You watch too much pornography.

38)You have the indencency to expect people who want to read 70something expressions of how you wouldn't write a show when you have nothing to show for your own expressions except from racist diatribes about black women's hair.

39)TLDR

40)Obfuscating the face of the villain is a trope as old as Greek theater. Get over yourself.

Clearly some fans forget a certain show called DS9 that ran from 1993 to 1999. Hardly and even in the most uplifting and silly circumstances was it offered up as the brightest and most hopeful series in the franchise. Religious extremism and political machinations that would make Machiavelli proud, internecine warfare between Federation citizens over the concepts of freedom and home, a war spanning two quadrants of the galaxy with the highest death toll in the recorded history of this universe and a finale that involved mass genocide and the battle between good and noncorporeal entities who'd possessed the body of the lead villain.

And then it all comes to a grinding halt for episodes where everyone plays baseball and decide to rescue the holographic 60s Vegas singer from holographic mobsters.

CBS Trek could learn a thing or two from older Trek when it comes to taking breaks for fun. Seems like 95% of it is concentrated in Lower Decks.

Honestly, on a my rewatch those were two of my favourite stories that season. DS9 got a lot of flak for interrupting its ongoing war arc, and I don't entirely disagree with that criticism, but I'd rather have a series with those episodes than without them.

"Take Me Out To The Holosuite" is still one of my all time favorite DS9 episodes. I'm a fan of baseball anyway, but the way they combined it into such a fun outing that still tugs at your heartstrings (Rom's just a sweetheart and the underdog you love), it's a terrific episode all-around, and I think embodies the best of our characters.

No it's not encouraging. Unless these new viewers gravitate to the better written Star Trek and the writers see that as evidence of not just needing to throw us older fans a bone now and then, we're gonna be inundated with even more surface storytelling.
Mileage will vary but I find this very encouraging. I want people to jump in and participate in Trek. I want them to explore these different themes and ideas. It will allow people a way in rather than feeling they can't participate, which I see more and more with Trek.

I tried to change my vote to a 5. Upon reflection, this episode is up there with some of the most boring I've ever seen. A few of the ideas are interesting at face value. But the execution of them - ooooh boy. Many scenes of banal action and exposition. No Soong. No Q. Guinan tells a very short story and does some screaming. The "therapy session" was poorly staged and its dialogue stunk. You can have riveting exposition if care is put into it. Look at the final scene from episode 4 where Q was talking aloud, but to Renee? Captivating. These past two episodes really bring home the point of tamping down on how much the audience has to guess or imagine has happened.

Still, Orla Brady is great. What a treat she is.

Wishing Jeri Ryan would've had more to do.

Next episode...

FBI Agent: So what is this we caught on video? Some new Russian personal stealth weapon?

Guinan: Give me a break, this is just badly done CGI! Where's our lawyers? I haven't seen CGI this bad since the deepfakes on Star Wars!

Audience: Ooohhhhhhh!!!!

You talk like all the shows are made by the same people, they're not.

Each series has its own showrunner and mostly different writing teams.

No, I'm talking like I wish more of them had the same appreciation for lighthearted story content. Which I do. I realize they're run by different people and it shows.

Yup. Some parts of the fandom need to stop the gatekeeping angle of “only people who have watched ALL TRUE TREK are allowed here”. If someone likes just PIC and wishes to discuss it, why not? You don’t have to go through some kind of weird “higher level Trekkie” ritual to be allowed to have a say and participate. I’m not a science fiction fan at all, and yet Trek appeals to me as long as it comes with Jean-Luc. What I’m saying is that people have different reasons for watching. These differences should be embraced. If PIC brings in new fans with fresh ideas, that’s amazing, and I for one am proud of the show (and Sir Patrick’s work) for doing so.

It's not clear what True Trek even is. At least Star Wars has the original films of episodes 4-6 to fall back on that even the most vicious warring factions all seem to like. I don't think TOS has that same hold due to not aging as well as the SW films, even with the remastered effects.

Was Picard never aware that his mother had mental issues? I assume he was considering it was explained to him via a memory. I suppose it was his perception of his father trying to cope with and his mother's issues that was buried under a childhood perception of the events that Picard had refused to examine before.
