What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

T'Pol's made even less sense. At least in-universe the catsuit was supposed to help her original human skin layer regenerate and her body return to the way it was supposed to be. T'Pol's 22nd century Vulcan catsuit was just totally illogical. No pun intended.

Rick Berman just knew what Jeri Ryan had done for VOY's demographics and reputation and wanted the same for Jolene Blalock and ENT.

Form-fitting space uniforms can be very cool and futuristic and science fiction-y. But if they are going to have one character wear something like that, then they should make everybody else wear it too. My controversial opinion is that 90s Starfleet uniforms and the ENT coveralls are too baggy and unstylish, and downright frumpy. My favorite modern Trek uniforms would be the ones on the USS Kelvin at the beginning of ST09. Trim and sleek with just the right hint of retro-futurism.

The Enterprise uniforms were simple and pragmatic, probably the most sensible garb in any Trek series. The Vulcans should either have worn something similar, or else something like their everyday clothes, with something resembling robes. T'Pol's catsuit was concordant with neither practicality nor tradition.

Controversial opinion:
I like the needlessly sexy jumpsuits. It's illogical, unnecessary, whatever. I also like the numerous revealing dresses from TOS. Or Padme's dresses from Star Wars.

My only defense is that I'm also totally in favour of objectifying men on screen as well, like nuTrek did with Chris Pine & all the Marvel movies and Craig-Bonds do.

Basically what I'm saying is... I like watching ridiculously sexy people on screen? Even if it doesn't make reeeeally sense from a story perspective? (Hey, this thread is supposed to be controversial, right? :guffaw:)

I won't say I don't understand this perspective because I semi-do. I just loathe the needless part of it. Like, Padme's dresses were cool and she was a queen. It had a semblance of world building to it.

T'Pol or Seven? That one bothers me more because it's point is painfully obvious and I hate titillation for titillation's sake.

I'm cool with it as long as it feels like something the character (and actor) are into wearing. Like Uhura's miniskirts. The actor wanted them, the character probably liked them, everyone's happy.

Agree with both of you.
In fact, Uhura in SNW not wearing a mirror (and fabulous hair) really throws me off.

Of course their new characters La'an and especially Ortega (who I already love) as well as No. One don't wear sexy clothes, and absolutely shouldn't. That doesn't seem to fit their characters. But Uhura?

But then it isn't Uhura anymore.
I think they should have her play a new character anyway, between Nichelle Nicols & Zoe Saldana Uhura is already pretty well defined, and I don't feel the need to revisit/reinterpret that any further. And for a new character to have a totally different look (one more "with the times") would be just logical. But they chose Uhura. Then it should be Uhura.

Like, Seven not wearing a jumpsuit on PIC is not just fine, but logical and appreciated. But if they ever do a reboot of VOY, and cast a new Seven of Nine, and don't put her in a jumpsuit, I would just find that... weird.

A character is not defined by a single look.

I'd say Zaldanas style is not the single same style than Nichols, but still similar enough.

Controversial opinion but I think when you are doing a prequel type series, which SNW is, then a style is not set in stone. You might have some variety in the character, especially someone who is playing a cadet. Cadets, by and large, are not known for their individuality. They are generally students who are struggling to learn all the rules and regs of their new life.

I think they might reference Uhura's style later on, but right now? No, that's not reasonable.

I somewhat agree, but I think the other way is more natural: Women starting out presenting themselves as sexy/feminine, and later on becoming more independent.

NuUhura starting out as kickass independent strong woman only to become 'sexy phone lady' later on just feels a bit weird somehow. I mean, I'm not judging, but still.

Again, I would agree if the situation was not "fourth year cadet." There's a process to being a cadet and usually that styling is not going to come out until after they are comfortable in their assigned role, and becoming more independent.

I don't know. I'm a person who doesn't put much stock in look or style so I'm probably missing something obvious here.
