I thought that whole weird thing was staged but after his acceptance speech, it really appears to have been real.

I'm still not 100% convinced but it's one hell of a sell if it was. I've heard the uncensored exchange between them and it'd be surprising if it was a put on.. Along with Gaga's "I've got you" support of Liza Minelli it was a surprisingly moving show. More and more I think Harlan was onto something with "Let Me Help" from City on Edge of Forever.

Anyway... back to Dune, I was not as crazy about as many but it was good to see it pick up a number of awards and probably the ones I'd tend to think it makes sense to have won.

It was bound to happen, these technical categories are quite open to many film genres whereas the "main or important" categories such as best Actor/Actress, Best Movie or Best Director usually exclude genres like Comedy, Science Fiction and basically anything else that isn't human drama stories. I think for decades that is due to the makeup of the voting members which have been almost uniformly old/white people that simply don't get something like Science Fiction most of the time - as soon as you have laser weapons, spaceships or anything else i feel their reaction is that it's not worth considering.

It changes but ever so slowly, biggest blowout was Lord of the Rings back then that swept the Oscars back then but still have a feeling it's more like they had to give them Oscars due to the massive popularity of the movies and their own credibility was at stake if they once again ignored something that didn't fit the Oscar mold.

That is one awesome picture and i love how they used the Atreides "combat greeting".

Ages ago i talked about modern movie fighting and my expectations for it and obviously they delivered. I love these little background production videos for movies, where they explain what went into certain parts of the movie.

Makes me want to see Dune 2 even more with the upcoming large scale Fremen vs. Sardaukar battles. I wonder if they'll include that scene where the Fremen capture a Sardaukar combat team and Paul "instructs" the Sardaukar Captain to deliver a message ( maybe it'll even be the same Sardaukar officer from this movie who talked to deVries?).

Love the new movie. Way better than David Lynch's adaption and the later mini series. Just wish they also had similar scene with a guild navigator in the movie, like it was the case in the 1984 version.

I am wondering if they will save that for if they make a movie of Dune Messiah and introduce Edric

I assume it will play a bigger part at the end of the next movie when the Emperor and the Guild come to Arrakis to face off with that pesky prophet and pain in the ass the locals call Muad'dib ;)

Just recently i saw a reaction video with a couple who knew absolutely nothing about the material and i was quite entertained to see the reactions of people who had no clue about the story. They liked it very much and are now eagerly awaiting the second movie. Their reaction to see the Fremen Wormrider at the end was hilarious - they nearly fell from their chairs  Desert power indeed.

That would be great! The navigators were always one of the most fascinating aspects of the Duneverse for me.

By the way, considering the gender change for Liet Kynes, do you think Chani is still supposed to be her daughter in the new movies or will she have a new origin?

I don't know but it's also a non-plot point, i.e. it doesn't really matter to the character of Chani who her father/mother is, as this doesn't play into the story or affect the relationship between Paul and Chani. The same applies to the gender of Liet Kynes - it is not relevant to the plot ( as opposed to Paul being a man or the Bene Gesserit being all women), so i didn't care at all about that "issue".

It was pretty much a throw away line in the book.

Probably daughter. It's impact in the book was more about the emotional connection for Chani mourning the loss of her parent.

I think this is one of the great things about this movie. It does a great job a interpreting the original source material for fans but it it totally accessible to the casual viewer.

I just saw this. I thought it was dire. I'm very disappointed.

    Bland color palette.

    Oversimplified.

There are no characters, only caricatures hitting their marks and delivering distilled snippets of dialog.

Incredibly, it managed to make lasguns boring, which was one of the unpleasant surprises.

It's absurdly inconsistent in multiple places. For example, first it takes the trouble to establish within one of its dialog snippets that you wouldn't survive even just hours in the desert without your stillsuit, then it shows the Fremen, to whom fortunes are measured in the amount of water in one person's body (which it also dedicated dialog to establishing), removing their facial coverings while outside in daylight just to give us that picture-perfect look at their faces. Another example is that there is no clear and convincing motivation for why Kynes would first refuse to help and then change her mind. That seems to be all about plot, not character, and it's a needless distraction, relative to what else is happening in the relatively limited running time. Her change of heart is distilled down to her abandoning her duties to the Emperor because she lost her man. Ridiculous.

    The music was annoying music.

Paul is dreadfully miscast. The Emo Haderach.

Enjoy, but this is not for me.

No surprise about Pugh's casting. Essentially confirmed awhile ago.

I'm unfamiliar with Butler but a quick look at his Wikipedia page shows he has done a lot of stuff, just nothing I've seen (which means nothing). Not at all surprised by Feyd's casting.

Question remains if Count Fenring will also get cast.
