Should Uhura be called by her first name? Nyota.

In the original series, she was simply known as Uhura. We never knew of her first name until the JJ Abrams Kelvin films where it is revealed to be Nyota and Uhura is actually her family or last name.

I really hope they keep that consistency in TOS. it sort of reminds me of the xmen character in the comics Rogue. No one knew of her real name until about 20 years later. when it was revealed to be Anna Marie Raven.

Also the name reveal in Kelvin verse was more of a plot device, I always assumed it would be difficult to write a story where Spock has a stable girlfriend but I thought the writers were clever in the first film to have Spock be the only one call his girlfriend by her first name, that was one of the best way to reveal some mind of deep intimacy between Kelvin timeline spock/uhura without sex scenes or the standard generic couple stuff we see in movies.

However as this is TOS we know spock and uhura were never together and even if they get together in strange new world, it will be a short thing, so I hope they just stick to just calling her Uhura and not Nyota.

I think this show does need to try as much as it can to keep a strong consistency to TOS after they failed so badly to do that with star trek discovery, which was the lame reason the crew of discovery had to jump to the future.

It'll depend on setting. When she's on duty she'll be addressed as Uhura, when she's off-duty she'll be addressed as Nyota. Same as every human character in this franchise alternates between their first or last names depending on setting.

So in other words, business as usual. Not sure why this needed it's own thread, to be honest.

No reason not to call her by her first name. PIke calls Ortegas "Erica," I believe. This seems to be his style, which is refreshing in itself.

By some people yes and by others not. In reality people tend to address others in their own style. Spock for example is someone who I think would call her cadet or ensign a lot and would not be calling people by their first name. It was I think kind of a big deal that he would even sometimes call Kirk by his name, Jim.

Strange New Worlds shouldn't be beholden to the fact that the original series never said Uhura's first name out loud before.

Why? Do you want everyone to be addressed by last name?

I don't care, one way or the other. But most everyone in TOS went by their last names and it never bothered me.

TOS is a different animal. Constant last names now comes across as very stiff and formal to me; Impersonal.

    Mileage will vary.

If it means I don't have to listen to them wallow in their personal problems, then I'll take stiff and formal!

    To each their own.

I've had enough stiff and formal to last a life time.

Characters like Uhura and Sulu were addressed by last name only in TOS because the producers/writers never bothered to give them full names.

I'm thankful I'm almost never addressed by my last name, which is "Running". I had enough of those jokes growing up and going to school. If anyone does address me by my last name, I say, "Mr. Running was my father. I'm not him. I'm just 'Darren'."

    People can have one name.

Sulu was pan-Asian, not Japanese in TOS, named b/c of GR’s familiarity w the Sulu Sea as a WWII pilot, iirc. Not Japanese per se, and not Hikaru.

Are his or Uhura’s first names used in the TOS movies?

Uhura is so lovely, I’d rather hear that. It’s a cool idea, someone just giving their kid the name “Freedom” and leaving it at that.

Hikaru is used in Star Trek 6. Nyota is only used in the Kelvin Timeline so far I believe (Picard may have changed this, if so I missed it, as I know they mention her commanding young Picard or something).

She should be called by her middle name, "Diane".

It would be really great if you could make a post without a swipe at the other shows you don’t like.

strange thing to me about the name Uhura, I always thought it was better as a first name than a last name or a saw name. :) I think the name uhura is lovely too because it reminds me of other names like Alero and Aurora. Which are very soft beautiful feminine names though not last name enough for me like Uhura

One thing that’s interesting is that with all the teasers in, Una and La’an get title cards with their first names, and with all the others they went with their surnames (if they have surnames, since Spock’s a mononym, and we don’t know about Hemmer either way).
