What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Before Picard, I re-watched all of TNG, and I think the sweet-spot was when Rick Berman was the Executive Producer, Michael Piller was the Showrunner, and Gene Roddenberry was still alive. Rick Berman was responsible for making sure the show got made, Michael Piller was making sure the writing met a high standard, and the fact that Gene Roddenberry was alive meant they both went out of their way to make him happy.

During the first two seasons, TNG was "too Gene"... in a bad way. During the last two seasons, TNG was "too Rick". So while re-watching Early-TNG, I was thinking, "This is what happens when Gene Roddenberry takes his vision too far!" And while re-watching Late-TNG, I was thinking, "Now everything I don't like about the Berman Era is front and center!"

There's a reason why most people think the middle of the series is the best.

You can’t see? If I were Wil Wheaton, I would have felt very, very uncomfortable with them.
I can’t see.
What I can see is an old man, Eugene Wesley Roddenberry, wish-fulfillment Mary Sue-ing it through his young alter ego.
You get old, maybe have regrets, you rewrite yourself into the future, a young man with life ahead of him and currently “crushing it” as a prodigy on the fleet’s flagship, eventually impressing the father figure.

Not just as an old man. April/Pike/Kirk were extensions of the pilot/cop/tv writer who wanted to effect change. A starship captain on the frontier, with little interference from base, is a powerful figure, indeed.

For sure.
Was just addressing the immediate post. Something bittersweet about GR as old man inserting young Wesley into his second chance to do a trek to the stars. I know it’s hip to vilify him, but he was human just like me, with strengths and foibles.

My newest controversial STAR TREK opinion:

The show should've been about a group of celebrities traveling the world entertaining troops in a USO show. Drama ensues on this particular STAR TREK.
I don’t know if Arnold Moss had the chops for the lead role, but Barbara Anderson would have held her own.

If it was produced today, we could have a weekly whodunit, none of which are resolved until the final episode. “Star Dexter” or something, with a really smashing backstory for Lenore.

Maybe I'll reboot STAR TREK one day to be a USO show, featuring the Kardashians and other reality stars. Yeah, that's a money maker right there!

The lead character would have to be an actor who moonlights as a consultant for the police. They're better at police work than the actual cops.
