Romulan Ale

Knowing how pricing model of alcohol works in the US, it probably tastes just as good as other planets' liquor, but it's illegal so it makes it better.

Constellation Brands introduces "Captain Riker's 100% Illegal Romulan Ale -- now in four exciting flavors! Supernova Starfruit, Invisible Warbird Raspberry, Tomalak's Tamarind and a vastly improved Vrenak's Swizzleberry Punch! (*) "

(*) Artificially flavored.

In my head canon, "Romulan Ale," Kali-fal, and the unnamed blue stuff from "The Enterprise Incident" are all variations of the same beverage.

But "ale" seems to be a misnomer. Unlike true top-fermented grain malt ales of Earth, the Romulan stuff has no effervescence or frothy head. And Kirk's reaction to it seems more like he just took a sip of hard liquor.

I think it's probably the Romulan counterpart to "malt liquor".

Generally it's surprising that there are so many things that can be consumed by multiple species. Romulans have an entirely different blood chemistry (based on copper IIRC) so you would also expect that a lot of the things they eat would be poisonous to humans (and vice versa).

Perhaps that's also one of the reasons you have to be careful with Romulan ale.

I was thinking this. Like, maybe it brings on some terrible disease of yesterday that the people of the 24th Century have long forgotten? Drink too much and get incurable Parkinson's or something.

Or maybe it can be distilled to make Romulan poison?

"Why are these foolish humans drinking singularity-chamber coolant!? It is pure ethanol and food-coloring so we can spot leaks."

"Do not ask questions subcommander, there is profit to be made."
