Who is your favorite captain? And why?

2. Picard: I love Picard through 90 - 95 % of TNG and Patrick Stewart is obviously great in the role, but when the writers screwed him up they REALLY screwed him up (Homeward, his asking why Crusher saved the people in cryo in Neutral Zone): stuff that even as a kid watching left a very very bad taste in my mouth.

I regard Picard in The Neutral Zone as "early instalment weirdness". Not really relevant to the character, characterisation to ignore.
Like Spock in The Cage.
Or the Ferengi in The Last Outpost, for that matter.
Or unbearded Riker.
(hey, maybe Amon Amarth was referencing TNG when they wrote "Hammerfest, the last outpost, has fallen to unbearded men")

That was the point. He had to grow. He didn't have his dad's guidance.

Point received, but it was still painful to watch, and - a little like grimdark Snyder Superman - a little heartbreaking because it was a blockbuster movie that was the introduction to the character for many.

What was his excuse in the season 7 Homeward?

Heartbreaking? Good grief, it's a fictional character not hero. I love that Kirk because he grew, changed and became better! Also, my wife enjoyed the character and became more interested in Trek. It's not heartbreaking unless the character stays in that place of struggle.

Sisko--because he was the only one who had a spouse and children. Most of the others made excuses about how they were "married to their job/ship," but Sisko found the time. I respect his priorities.
