What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

How would you say that scene compared to the torture scene in ENT Cold Station 12?

Sorry, I remember very little of that episode.

The one in the Wrath of Khan novel showed how brutal Khan was. And extremely bloody in my imagination. But you get introduced to the Scientists pretty quick and they're likeable people, so... you could picture it very well.

I was way too young to see TMP at the cinema, but I know my Mom did and she often related how the majesty of the Enterprise in the flyby reduced her to tears. It was the Enterprise that had existed in her mind, not the model from the TV show, finally brought to screen.

Whenever she talked about TMP, even decades later, she'd gush over the flyby.

You are very lucky. My Mom (who threw a booksatchel atop an AMT she tossed in a closet…the second I had lost…the first to a mean cousin) just dropped me off at the theater in ‘79.

I was 13.

I do love Discovery but I found my interest waned within the first few episodes of this season. I think I watched everything up to episode 3, but I may be imagining that and I only watched the first 2.

I put that down to me though. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a show and come back to it a few months later and love it. i was just the same with Season 2 of The Boys, which finally I ended up really enjoying. Same for Season 7 of Brooklyn Nine Nine.

I was hoping for something like a mix of adventures establishing what’s what in the alpha/beta quadrants with some of the new frontier exploration opportunities 1,000 years with naff all warp travel would allow to have developed.

Instead; oh no, it’s a world ending threat mystery and much treading of water again.

DISC storytelling is actually very reminiscent of TOS!

Remember back at the start of DISC news, they put up an mg of the ST Bible passage starting with the words, Star Trek is...

Well I think they really have followed TOS book here almost to the letter. Think about all the speechifying and emotionalizing going on TOS. Really think about it.

The thing that is different though is the story serialization, stretching a primary plot to a whole season. That's the twist, that's what somehow keeps us from seeing how similar they really are unless we really think about it.

Aside from what they think is cheap production values, which they were not, things most naysayers complain about DISC for they also complain about TOS for!

I kind of agree with you @shapeshifter. However, I feel (and just my opinion) that stretching TOS style plots (burn being caused by loneliness a good eg) doesn’t work well. They are good as parables but can’t withstand a whole season weighing on it.

Plus I don’t always feel like they have the answer when they start the season…

Well, one difference between them is that I remember TOS antagonists/villains having some motivation.
Whereas I still have no idea why Control wanted to eradicate all life. I haven't seen DSC season 4, but I doubt it's explained there, given the events of season 3.
