As somebody else said, Course: Oblivion, while even the actual title suggests it, is probably one of the saddest episodes of Star Trek ever. No reset button, nobody knows what happened, no hope. Wow. More Star Trek needs to reflect this ethos. That is Lovecraftian as hell, that the universe doesn't care about you, whatever "you" are.

Urghhh... that episode was darker than a puddle of ink in the bottom of a mineshaft on the dark side of the moon... after the sun has burned out.

It was a very good episode, and the dark tone was a nice contrast to most Trek, but it was nice because it was a contrast. I'd rather it be used sparingly. If they go that dark too often in Trek, it would stop feeling like Trek to me.

Those of you who are Year of Hell fans like me... remember the big silver pocket watch that Chakotay replicated for Janeway? The one she hangs on her waist, and at the end of her goodbye to Tuvok, which I'm watching through a blur of tears because it's such a friggin' awesome scene, she's alone on the bridge of Voyager, and she gives it a little adjust before heading into her final "Time's up" death ride...

Well, anyway, Chakotay said he replicated it before the Year of Hell began, so it should have still existed even though the events of the episode didn't happen, so... did Janeway ever get her big silver pocket watch?

I think it's safe to assume that Janeway did get her big silver pocket watch in the end, though I can't remember if we ever saw it again. Maybe there's still a chance!

I wish they could gave shown it, though. Even if we just saw it on her desk or something. It would have been a nice bit of continuity.

Of course, mentioning Voyager and continuity in the same sentence... almost pointless, isn't it?

It's funny how the writers didn't seem to realise that they could throw a happy version of that scene into a later episode and the audience would love it, especially considering that the whole of Year of Hell is just a version of what we already saw in Before and After.

I love nuBSG and The Expanse. I love Deep Space Nine and some of the darker Klingon and Dominion War stories. I though Course: Oblivion was a fantastic episode. But I absolutely do not want Trek as a franchise to become more dark and nihilistic. It should remain a positive vision of the future. That doesn't mean adversity can't happen, but wallowing in more depressing, downbeat stories is not the way to go. They should be used sparingly so that they carry a greater impact.

Well, I don't believe in it myself actually, I see it just as a fringe possibility that I felt obligated to mention. I think it's far more likely he replicated it before YoH started. And yes, it would have been cool to see it back in some later episode.

I wonder when Day 65 after the end of Year Of Hell was. Hunters (and Chakotay probably feeling rejected) was 6 episodes later, so probably before Day 65 and he may have decided to give a less meaningful birthday gift instead. Day 65 might be during Retrospect or The Killing Game.

I know that much. But if Chakotay had replicated it before Day 1 (where the timeline reset), with the intent of giving it to Kathryn, why would he not have done so when her birthday rolled around again?
