General Trek Questions and Observations

Who pays for Discovery and Picard? They've had a lot of practice selling Star Trek to fans, I'm sure they'll find a way to make a profit off it. Maybe not immediately, but old Trek will still get an audience for years to come, that's why they're doing a new HD version of The Motion Picture right now.
Not to sound pessimistic but I am not convinced that the cost will be worth it. But, I am not the target audience since I find HD headache inducing.

Yeah, we're working off incomplete information here so we can only make guesses about whether it'd be worth it for them or not. There's definitely a demand, but is there enough demand and can they profit off that demand when Trek fans are already subscribing all-year-round to get the new episodes? I'm presuming that physical media sales aren't going to be enough to pay for it.

That is potentially the million dollar question. And part of me is always cynical because of past retail experience of people swearing up and down at me that they would buy a product if the store would only get it in. We'd get it in and it would sit. So as much as people are saying "Oh, yeah, HD! Absolutely! It's about fucking time!" would they actually buy it?

I wonder if that was due to your customers losing interest in the meantime. Sometimes it's best to strike when the iron's hot, and right now Voyager should be pretty hot.

Always a possibility, but when you have regular customers you get to know them pretty well and things didn't move. And not just products but specific brands and they would just sit.

Now, apply this to an HD update to VOY or DS9. It is extremely expensive because some shots have to redone because of the CGI being done a particular way. So, even if Voyager is hot right now by the time they do the process will the interest still be there? It's an expensive gamble to make.

It'll be very expensive, but still only a fraction of what they're spending on their other shows. It'll definitely cost more than the recent Babylon 5 HD remaster, which didn't replace the effects, but I believe that most of what they'll need to recreate the CGI still exists (including an updated HD Voyager model) and Voyager used CGI much more sparingly than later series.

But, again, that's the cost/benefit analysis that goes in to this. We will be spending money on this when we could be using it on new content to expand our catalog and use that as a selling point to expand in to more markets. Vs. investing in older content that may not sell.

You got to weigh the options from a cost standpoint.

Yeah, I'm not saying that they're idiots for not doing it immediately, I'm presuming they've done more market research than I have, but it's definitely in the realm of possibility that a proper remaster happens and it's a certainty that it'll be superior than anyone's HD upscale. Unless they screw it up.

No, they are not idiots. I would be curious to see that market research, but I understand the process. It's just one of those weird pet peeves of mine when people go "HD! HD! HD!" like it's a default decision with no consideration of cost.

At some point though it's going to seem pretty weird that DS9 and Voyager haven't been remastered, as every other notable series around them is rescanned for HD. I mean even Babylon 5 has a HD remaster now and I never saw that coming. Classic Doctor Who has a HD remaster and there wasn't even a HD source available for most of it!

Perhaps. I don't know. I'm definitely not the target audience.

But the majority of Classic Doctor Who in "HD" is very obviously up-rezzed and doesn't look any better than it did on DVD. The only advantage to having them on blu-ray is that more episodes fit on a disc and a whole season comes together in a fairly slim case, so less storage space is needed overall. With picture quality, the exception would be stuff like "Spearhead from Space" which was the only serial done completely on film, as well as certain outdoor scenes shot on film in other episodes where they were able to locate a good quality source.

Kor

I'm not trying to say otherwise, I'm just pointing out that they went to the effort and expense to remaster it to the very best image quality possible, going back to the original 625-line source, even though most of the time it was only a slight improvement over the DVD resolution.

Trek has become something akin to professional wrestling.

Legacy characters like Seven of Nine and Janeway now have their own musical cues when they appear on other shows (Seven and Janeway have both gotten versions of the Voyager theme).

It reminds me of the WWE's Jumbotron themes accompanying the wrestlers into the arena.
For 50 years, whenever I watch non-TOS Treks I am more likely to be hearing TOS themes in my head than whatever is playing in the non-OS episodes. Ba-ba-baam-baam-baam-baam-baam-baa-baa-baa-baa-baam!

There's definitely a demand, but is there enough demand and can they profit off that demand when Trek fans are already subscribing all-year-round to get the new episodes?

Depends on whether they count views of individual series. Perhaps if everyone stopped giving those shows view hits they would begin moving to upgrade them.

That is what I am counting on in my boycotting, (cliche? No! I mean it!) all streaming DS9 and VOY until they get their HD due.

Join me and together we will send the message to TPTB... Remaster DS9 and VOY NOW!

Just in case, here’s a spoiler warning for tonight’s Jeopardy! National College Tournament.

There was one category, Parts of the Franchise, who’s $800 answer clue was: TV SERIES SUBTITLED “LOWER DECKS” & “PRODIGY,” and the college student representing Dartmouth, Gus Guszkowski, did Trekkies everywhere proud by buzzing in immediately and coming out with “What is Star Trek?” in a flash.

It was particularly fun to see one of the contestants so quickly and confidently come up with the Star Trek answer, while they were all less familiar with huge franchises, like a question about Fast and the Furious, which none of the college kids were able to get.

It's rare I put Voyager on (which makes me sad) and never that I put DS9 on because of the quality. Access to a remastered VOY/DS9 is what would push me into subscribing to Paramount+. TMP remaster nearly pushed me over the edge, but not quite.

Moved to General Observations thread.

Saw something interesting when viewing "Latent Image"... I always figured that Neelix was a civilian, but his "official" title is Crewman, according to the EMH's database (Naomi, definitely a civilian, has no title). And if course, Kes was a medical tech. So I guess the question is, why were the Maquis in uniform, but Kes and Neelix in civilian outfits?

Could the Maquis have stuck to their leathers?
Could Neelix have worn the yellow uniform we see him wear in assorted alternate realities? Could Kes (and Seven for that matter) have worn blue?
