The Next Deep Space Nine

Maybe the key thing that made DS9 remarkable was its divergent setting — a station as opposed to another Enterprise. That opened the door for the franchise to do diverse series, including the next one VOY not being the tale of the next Enterprise (E-E, G) or an earlier one (B, C, NX), and to get lost in space.

What if you had to do another series based on an original idea. Where would you set it? Who would be its characters?

If it’s planet-side, how would you keep it interesting, if you believe DS9 was harmed by its “stationary” setting.

I dare ask when would you set it too, but neither trip to the distant past (ENT) nor future (DSC S3/4) diverged enough from the “present” to allow me, for one, to fully buy it. So stay in the 24/25th Century. Unless you think your 32nd Century Academy idea with Superintendent Tilly really works.

An ocean going research ship in 2032, exploring the impact of climate change on the oceans, charting sea lanes, cataloguing sea life, dealing with freedom of navigation issues, piracy, migration etc.
There‘s a permanent navigational crew and recurring guest scientists and specialists for the varying missions.

A limited series based on the Temporal Cold War is a gift for writers willing to take up the challenge.

My idea for a spinoff featuring Seven of Nine and the Rangers goes something like this...

The Rangers bring enough stability to the former Romulan neutral zone area that they are able to establish their own local government to help keep order. Now the shoe is on the other foot. They have to what the Federation couldn't... maintain peace and stability in this very rough Frontier area of space.

Also, they have to maintain the peace with the neighbors, namely the Federation and the Romulans, all the while looking out for the best interests of their newly founded state.

Supposed it's in the best interest of this new nation to Allied themselves with the romulans over the Federation? Could you imagine 7 in command of a ranger vessel facing down Janeway or Chakotay over some sensitive issue? Or the Federation wants to invoke the prime directive over one issue or another, but seven of nine has to prioritize the needs and wants of her people over Federation Dogma? Lots of potential drama.

Why wouldn't it? Buffy worked. Smallville worked.

Saving the universe between lessons at Starfleet Academy? It'll be amazing.
My two cents:

Because Tilly in her last season or two has become one-note and annoying. Plus she’s barely passable as a teacher, and nowhere near as good as a thousand others who’d be better as superintendent than her.

Also, the 32nd Century kind of sucks. You’d think a thousand years in the future they’d be in strange multidimensional ships that look like balls of light and part of some Galactic Union, possibly spanning, again, multiple dimensions, and galaxies…

Instead we get ENT II, with mostly cosmetic differences from the previous Prime Setting. ENT functioned not unlike the Berman 24th Century; the 32nd isn't far from the Kurtzman 23rd/24th.

Every era in Trek is essentially the same. ENT had decon gel they used all of twice, TNG has holodecks, DSC has beaming badges they never use, but whatever the era it's SSDD. It's in no way realistic but then neither is Trek anyway?

I want to see a show set 20, 50 years after Nemesis and see the status of the Alpha quadrant, to see the Cardassians after the Dominion war etc
Call it Prime Directive and explore the impact the Federation has had on civilizations from their perspective.

One setting we’ve not had is that of a colony. We’ve had ships visit in on a colony for a story of the week, but not one set at one.

You’d need a maguffin concept/conceit which would bring in either conflict and or aliens species and drive the drama.

Buffy took place over a Hellmouth, Smallville was about people getting superpowers, it seems like they'd need some extra source of drama for Starfleet Academy or else it's just teenagers doing training.

Anyway here's my pitch for a new Star Trek series: a team of people discover an ancient Iconian gateway complex with a more primative gate which only teleports people between other similar gates that are scattered across the galaxy. The team nickname this Starfleet gate the 'stargate' and then use it to go on adventures.

A few years after the end of the Dominion War. Cardassia is under joint Federation-Klingon-Romulan occupation. The Federation is focused on reconstruction, ending the occupation and putting Cardassia on a path to membership. The Klingons and Romulans are skeptical. So are the Bajorans, the newest Federation members. There's probably a revanchist faction on Cardassia that perhaps the Romulans clandestinely support in an attempt to divide the Federation and Klingons? Inspiration is post-WW1 and post-WW2 Germany, as well as post-Cold War relations with Russia. How to deal with a defeated foe. We would see more Federation politics and diplomacy and intelligence work, and such a series could pick up some of the storylines from Deep Space Nine without being a direct sequel.

Yeah, I'm originally German and always liked the post-WW2 history of Germany, so I always liked the idea of Cardassia post-Dominion War setting out on a path similar to the Post-WW2 Germany. With a partial disassembling of the government and institutions. I can also imagine people like Natima Lang spearheading a cultural revival and a engagement with the past such as the truth about the Occupation of Bajor.

I remember that there was something of a stink when they were talking about putting Germany back together in 1990.

Maybe I’m boring but I’d like something around the politics or diplomatic corps. Rarely would anyone pull a phaser or get in a fight. It would be drama, tension built by the situations, avoiding war, brokering peace etc.

You could have ambassadors from other worlds as series regulars to keep it interesting. Like a drama set in the UN today. Set on Earth probably, but lots of diplomatic trips to other worlds.

It'll be teenagers going on adventures and saving the day, just like Buffy and Smallville. They've done whole comic book and novel series' set at the academy with similar stuff happing. No Hellmouth or kryptonite powers needed.

I'm going to have to see how this works in action, because my imagination's not coming up with any good reasons why students should be getting into thrilling Star Trek adventures. I mean assuming their teachers aren't sending them on shuttle rides to hostile alien planets every week.
