Casual clothes TNG to PIC - from terrible to far too 2020s?

Because JJ was a Star Wars fan.

Star Wars: The franchise where the movies that had characters speaking vernacular English (like Han Solo) were much more highly-regarded than its movies that almost exclusively featured characters speaking prescriptivist English (Episodes I, II, and III).

And 2 of the 3 sucked, and the one that didn’t only worked when you didn’t think to hard about the billions of people dying left and right and the murder that called it off.

You can diss it all you want, but the Abrams series brought Star Trek back from the dead and brought in a huge new audience base that's still with the show today.

Though the dialogue sucked, I don’t think it was the language that was the issue with Eps I-III.

Not in question.

Has anyone ever watched the movie Alien only to have their suspension of disbelief shattered because the crew of the Nostromo wear t-shirts and baseball caps?

On the other hand, has anyone ever watched the 1980s Flash Gordon movie and had their suspension of belief shattered because everybody looks so fucking stupid?

For me, it’s no to the former. The performances of the cast and the story itself mean it took me a few watches to even look at what they are wearing. In the latter however… it’s difficult to believe that Flash Gordon was released in the same year as The Empire Strikes Back.

Bad space clothes date sci-fi terribly. Alien… never gonna date. 42 year old movie and still looks great. Flash Gordon looked stupid in the year it came out and it still looks stupid now.

I have seen Flash Gordon (1980) several times. Where are the stupid looking costuems you menton?

I like the movie, it's a camp classic, but you're not going to tell me Brian Blessed looks his best in the linked picture above.

Or that backless, skintight red unitards combined with high heeled velvet space boots are a good look for anyone.

There's a lot to like in Flash Gordon. Not least a great soundtrack and an awful lot of fun. But it's daft looking movie, few would even contend that I imagine.

Maybe not the backless unitard, but weren't the 1980 Flash Gordon costumes supposed to look like the illustrations in the original comic strip and the 1930s serials? The script (by 60s Batman series campmaster Lorenzo Semple Jr.) certainly wasn't going the 'serious' SF route, even Star Wars style.

In the second season of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century 19791981, Buck Rogers often wore blue e jeans. But perhaps he had them made specially to feel more at home.

She only wore that when she was drunk to get her rocks off with Data. :D
Tasha and Data were into curling? That outfit would be a bit chilly for that.
(Couldn't resist: this morning, I was watching a playback of the Olympic round-robin game between the U.S. and South Korean women's curling teams: eight women getting their rocks off, on a sheet of ice.)

I thought De looked fantastic there. Everyone looked comfortable, honestly, and it was part of the chemistry that sold the campfire scene for me.

Costumes in this scene were probably my favorite aspect of ST:V --- the only one I had on video as a kid!
