Only select scenes were filmed with the arri alexa lf camera, and none in actually 70mm iMax. So the ar would seasaw like in the dark knight, or the "IMAX enhanced" MCU movies on Disney plus.

The entire film was shot in IMAX cameras and the vast majority of Dune was presented in 1.43 IMAX ratio, adding 40% to the size of the screen. Villeneuve has made it clear the IMAX ratio is the intended way for the film to be seen.
Have you watched both versions? Because I have. There is a huge difference switching from one to another, including not just the visual information but also a number of awkward cuts and tilts as the standard version *tries* to include visual information filmed for IMAX.
So what if there's a few moments where it changes ratio on your TV?
Yeah you're right, it is the whole film that was shot on Arri but only some scenes go to 1.90:1.
Reviews seem to suggest that widescreen works better for this movie though.

Personally, I want all movies to be filmed and released in 16:9 these days, since thats the AR of the medium that most people will watch the movies on - TV.
Some scenes? It was most of the movie. Better phrasing would be "The majority of the film is designed for 1.43 with a few presented in standard widescreen".
I strongly disagree with one random Blue Ray reviewer, comparing a home video version of a film against a non existent home video version of the film, and declaring the "edited to fit your screen" version better.
It's just reverse pan and scan from the pre-DVD days. You're not seeing the film in the way it was meant to be seen, you're seeing an edited version missing 40% of the screen with bad cuts and tilts added to make up for it.
There is no reason they couldn't have issued both version on the disc other than a plan to double dip later. I'll buy the real version when it comes out, I'm passing on this
I’m not a fan of tv shows in any other aspect ratio other than 16:9. Just seems wasteful. I don’t mind movies being different
Yeah, for shows its just some kind of cheap way to look "cinematic".
And another reason to just make movies in 16:9 is that its similar to the dimensions of the basic IMAX digital screens, and most "large format" theaters as well. Very few use the near 4:3 of the original IMAX (though that format is my favorite way to watch movies even now).
I would *really* like to see it win that.
I never understand when movies get this many Oscar nominations, but not Best Director, especially Best Picture. As a general role, I would think the best movie of the year would have had the best director, since they would have been the one responsible for making it that good.
Do directors have any control over the home releases? I had assumed that was all just handled by the studio's people.
Well, in theory "Best Picture" is the best film of the year - a combination of every sub category, including director, editor, actors, sound, etc.
Which means that it's entirely possible the director (editor, actors, etc.) of the best picture of the year had a weaker entry than the best director (editor actors, etc.) nominees but as a full package, the combination of all those hundreds of people's in a films credit listings, resulted in a better movie overall.
Unless somehow the director has it in their contract, no, they don't have control over home video releases. Most don't even have full control over theatrical releases
Yeah, if it was otherwise we would never hear of "director's cuts" because the releases themselves would be director's cuts.
