Law & Order General Discussion Thread

Guess who just signed on with OC....

Denis Leary

Not sure if this will also be in time for the Mercy Killers arc, although this link seemed to imply it would be.

The fly-by-night production of Organized Crime continues to bother me. It takes them nine to ten days to shoot a single episode, roughly the same amount of time for post-production (longer if the episode has special effects) and they've been on production hiatus for a while. They still have twelve more episodes to crank out before the May finale, though we know the February 24 episode is at least partially in the can because there's been a 15-second promo for it. But they're still racing against time.

Although, I suppose that isn't anything particularly new for Law & Order. NBC canceled Vanilla literally ten days before the airing of the season 20 finale, Rubber Room, which was in the middle of editing and other post-production. So Rene Balcer and company literally had no time to re-shoot, re-edit or re-structure the episode to make it a proper series finale. It's a miracle that it turned out as well as a series finale as it did, honestly (although I've always had a hunch that, despite Dick Wolf claiming NBC had promised him a shortened season 21 that would have led directly into the launch of L&O: Los Angeles, he had told Balcer to write a season finale that would have worked as a series-ender).

I've got weeks worth of SVU and OC stored and ready to watch but I'm having trouble finding the energy to get back into it. I'm seriously more excited about the OG starting back up. It's always been my least favorite of the original three shows, but it's very nostalgic to me because it was one of two shows I watched with my grandmother growing up. L&O and Unsolved Mysteries.

The lead actor for FBI: Most Wanted is bailing on the show and Dylan McDermott is taking over toward the end of this season.

They're both Dick Wolf shows, but they are on different networks. However, Dylan McDermott was part of an Ally McBeal/The Practice crossover, and those two shows were on different networks.
This is going to be weird since FBI Most Wanted (and the other two FBIs) are in the same universe as the Law and Order shows.

You've already got Jeremy Sisto over there playing a lead and Merkerson on Chicago Med. They're not doing crossovers for the most part.

I'm in the same boat when it comes to both series. Everyone here knows my distaste for the Saint Olivia SVU episodes and the entire tire fire that is OC.

I'm very excited to see Law & Order - Original come back. It's a show that hopefully will be encapsulated in an hour with a story. Characters can be affected and carry things from episode to episode, but at the same time, I don't have confidence in the writing right now for them to carry on anything else.

Chicago PD has done multiple crossovers with Chicago Med and SVU (and both Dick Wolf and Derek Haas have said they want to have another Chicago / L&O mega-event, it's just that COVID has been a roadblock). It seems like their approach is basically to pretend that only the currently running shows exist in the same universe and they just quietly pretend that the already-canceled shows don't exist.

Anthony Anderson has forgotten that his SVU character was someone else.

Sam Waterston is now five years older than Steven Hill was when Hill left Vanilla. And you can hear it in his voice.

Edit: And Wolf has already said he plans to have the Vanilla revival do crossovers with both SVU and OC.

Also, I'm wondering how they're going to lampshade the fuzziness of McCoy being the DA again.

OC showrunner Ilene Chaiken is leaving with five episodes left to shoot. Barry O’Brien promoted to showrunner.

Since we have a separate thread for the mothership, I propose we do one for OC (so we can keep this one for SVU). Any takers?

I don't know if it needs one. I watch OC, but I can't help thinking of it as "Law & Order: The EP Deal Christopher Meloni got because Mariska Hargitay is EP of his old show."

Given how little overall traffic the L&O threads get, it would make more sense to just have a catch-all Law & Order thread.

I would be quite satisfied if SVU gets rid of Velasco and keeps Khaldoun.

At least Khaldoun (am I spelling that right?) is interesting to watch. Velasco is the L&O equivalent of Joe Buck.

Frequent L&O guest star Ned Eisenberg has died. Link

(He's also been on the mothership and CI but since his most regular L&O role was on SVU - as defense attorney Roger Kressler - I'm posting it here.)
