I haven't been to this thread in months, and I was really hoping this had all finally crashed and burned, but nope. I can't believe this is still going on.
I've mentioned in other threads that I've been supporting a bunch of animal sanctuaries lately, and it's kind of sad that this dipshit can raise over a million dollars, but a sanctuary I follow and support out in Pennsylvania couldn't even raise a few hundreds to save one horse from being sent to slaughter a few months ago. Kind of makes me want to just spam all of the Axanar pages with links to the sanctuaries and tell people if they have enough money to donate, they should send to them rather than wasting it on this scam. At least then you're actually doing something good with it, rather than just lining a con man's pockets.

Complete bullshit. It's a tactic to garner more free money. A couple of the comments on there are promising more money already, and that's just the ten or so people who read the blog.

It is still amusing to read Alec Peters writing about what Alec Peters is going to do, even going so far as quoting what Alec Peters has said to, obviously, himself.

Or you could just ask AP since he's big into animal rescue (or at least was a year or two ago prepandemic)? That's one way of putting some of the otherwise wasted money to good use.

My point is that other people are giving to him instead of more worthwhile causes, so even if he give money to those causes, people were still giving him the money to him first.

"Worthwhile" is a subjective term. It's entirely possible for someone to consider Peters' pipe dream a more worthwhile cause than the plight of animals in need, as evidenced by the situation you yourself outlined. Presenting his donors with a proper charity to give to won't necessarily mean they'll switch their priorities.

I drop by to connect with friends and content creators to insure that all is well.
The state of social funding is fickle at best and couldn't interest me with it's best pitch.

Value is in the eye of the beholder, which is a two edge sword.

Which is just wrong and sad on so many levels. I challenge anybody who thinks these rescues aren't a worthwhile cause watch some footage from one of the livestock auctions and not change their minds. Anybody who could do that and still think some dude trying to make a movie is more important has no heart. And in case anybody is wondering, yes I have donated to four different sanctuaries so far, All Seated in a Barn, Freed Spirits Animal Rescue, Rancho Relaxo, and Furvivors Wonderland, and plan to donate more in the future.

For some it's a matter of both passion and the size of the problem.

I guess I can see the passion part, but as for the size of the problem, the only way to make it a smaller problem is for more people to do something.
I have to admit, my first post about this was semi-sarcastic, but the more I write about this, the more I'm actually starting to get angry.

I appreciate the anger to be sure but here is my experience in the matter. Take it with the recommended about of salt. One, the size of the problem can feel daunting; "This problem is so huge my money isn't going to change anything." That's the perspective a lot of people take about things like what you post about, or human trafficking, or whatnot.

Second is passion. How many people are passionate about sports or other hobbies? Do we denounce them for spending money on things they are passionate about when it could be used for similar causes? If not, then why is Axanar different, at least on the face? Obviously it is different because it has turned in to quite the scam.

I guess I thought of donations for stuff like Axanar or the rescue/shelters as kind of separate from hobbies or things like that.
That for most people it would be the extra money that would be spent alongside that money, not instead of it. I know that's the case for me.

I donated a lot over my 44 year career. Part of putting an end to strapping the boots on every morning at 6 am and taking them off well after dark was putting aside the desire to help every one's dreams come true.
There are a lot of things other than money you can find to make a difference. For the past 3 years I've been happy to give my time to the community Senior center.
I find it important for our elders that have lost nearly every one in their life to have a reason to get out and socialize even if it's only once a week. Sadly this past year all to often I've set up a lunch table for someones last visit on this Earth. That makes it all more important to insure it's done right.
Oh it's so easy to just send money and resolve the guilt for animals being mistreated. Ask Mr. Peters how much social funding platforms rake in while collecting all that money to support a cause.
Actually I spent $200 dollars on feed this year to help birds overwinter on my property. I happen to like seeing 70 wild turkeys and a few hundred little quail running around.
If you got a cause that's important to you, roll up your sleeves and do something about it.

To the surprise of only a few gullible marks, after bravely stating he'll be funding the final shoots for Axanar himself out of his own pocket, Mr Peters appears to now be delaying shooting as he can't afford it right now. I've no links, I read it on the Axamonitor FB page, you can look yourself if you wish.

It worries me that there are people out there that will not have seen this coming.

Obviously it will depend on the person. In my experience, donations come from a place of passion or desire to see a specific outcome. And then, based upon that passion, I would allocate those funds as I could.

Others may do it differently. But, hobbies/donations always track together with me, usually because that is money leftover from bills that I am already balancing.

One of the local farm animal rescues is actually doing a volunteer orientation this weekend, and I'm seriously considering going.
