Stargate SG1 show. any fans?

Especially for O'Neill, who has a whole story about that in the show itself. It isn't just a cliched military man attitude and O'Neill has quite a lot of character development throughout the show.

Also, it is telling that Anderson got asked to an Air Force award banquet and the show received an award from the Air Force due to its respectful portrayal. It's really quite something, especially when they were able to have two active duty Air Force generals have cameos. I think SG-1 did the best with the military portrayal, while having Jackson and Teal'c provide that outsider's perspective.

Not just any on duty Air Force generals. Both of them were actual members of the Joint Chiefs... they were the top dog of the Air Force branch.

"The Torment of Tantalus" has a lot to recommend it but AFAICR isn't really essential to following the overall story.

"Solitudes" is a good one too, and has more tie-in to episodes that will follow...but I don't think it's referenced again in S1.

I was basically thinking of the S1 episodes that had consequences for the larger world of the series.

"THE TORMENT OF TANTALUS" qualifies as essential because it helps establish the background mythology. We learn of the '4 races' alliance, which has the Asgard and Nox as members. It was a big stepping stone for the creation of the Ancients, too.

You likely will have to get it on DVD if you don't have it or haven't already seen it but I recommend the 90's show he was created by Micheal Pillar and also co-stared John DeLancie. It was called "Legend" were he plays a writer who sorts of becomes this local hero.

I meant to say I wanted to watch the parts of the Stargate franchise which star Richard Dean Anderson (and not any Stargate stuff). But yeah, I would very likely enjoy anything he is in. :techman:

Good point! So, essential to the overall arc of the show, not so much just for S1.

Given the highly secretive classification of the Stargate project, I'm not surprised we almost never another branch.
It doesn't work like that. Realistically speaking something like SGC should have had all branches of the US military involved, even if it's just something to the extent of giving the Army and Navy their own SG team(s). Indeed, dialogue on Atlantis does indicate all the branches of the US military are represented there, even though Air Force and Marines are the only ones we ever see onscreen which only makes the fact the SGC is pretty much exclusively Air Force and with a few Marines sprinkled in all the more jarring.

O’Neall’s detached sense of humor is great, but I have to say I think all the main characters are a little too aloof in how they engage with the storylines. I don’t understand Daniel; throughout the first two seasons he has barely ever mentioned his wife Sha’re (and would it kill them to involve her in more episodes?), which is supposedly the only reason he is involved in SG-1. I find that really off-putting.

I love whenever Bra’tac is in an episode because he is always SO intensely invested in the metaplot that it always feels like “Finally! Someone who knows what is going on, and cares!”

Yes, it would have.

Except, it isn't. It's also to continue the work of Catherine Langford, which he discovers in the "Torment of Tantalus" had been going on longer than even the first mission Daniel had been on. He also became more invested in undoing the destruction of the Goa'uld.

The issue with continuing the story is at this point they’ve introduced so much Star Trek tech into the universe you can’t have the kind of ground battles that made the early series great anymore.

I always if that had more to do with SciFi taking them over after they left Showtime. Showtime likely got them a bit more of a budget for location shootings and battles. I've observed the offworld ground batles happened much less often from season 6 onward.

They had an amazing one in Season 7.

You can still have them because earth projectile weapons like machine guns more often than not showed to be more effective than G'ould Staff Weapons and other energy based weapons. Zat guns only advantage was being able to shoot without killing if that was important to the mission or because they didn't feel deadly force was needed. C4 also was used a lot.
