Just no. This sounds like silly Ancient Aliens non-sense.
Well they don't have to actually land just use our solar system as a marker. Why would that be silly?
Because you're putting yourself in a position to be captured by and/or having your technology confiscated by a lower lifeform if something goes wrong. I imagine there are thousands of stars, just in our general area, without a current civilization of warmongers that an alien race could place a stargate.
I would think getting to a point of being that advanced, they would know the importance of location.
There's nothing particularly special about our G2 star or its system to use as a navigational aid. We humans emit artificial radio noise but it gets lost in the noise after a few light years. Pulsars and X-ray sources such as black holes would be much more convenient for navigation - perhaps some unusual binary, trinary etc. stellar systems as well. Pulsars are fairly long lived as potential beacons - tens to hundreds of millions of years - before their radio emissions die away. Black holes are less reliable as their emissions are controlled by the state of their accretion discs.
What frustrates me is that the sheer ridiculousness of UFOs being alien spacecraft does not stem from the impossibility or incredibility of alien encounters. It's more simple than that. I love how American medical researchers use the zebra analogy for rare diseases and an analogue of Occam's razor.
Zebras are real. People have seen zebras. People have occasionally heard zebras walk by their house. But if you're in the city hear hoofs, which would be incredible because horses are not found in most modern city streets, that's still not a zebra. Probably just a horse.
Aliens are a bit more incredible than zebras, obviously, because we have nothing in the way of evidence to point to their existence, and counting the number of stars is a vain exercise if you don't know how likely the evolution of a civilization like ours really is. But even if we had made contact with aliens, exchanged pictures and all, even potentially declared war on each other over the radio, random stuff whizzing in the sky still wouldn't be aliens. There are simply way more humans here. And way more nature than even humans. The human and nature would be your first suspects even if aliens had a confirmed landing.
But even if you think the thing whizzing in the sky is too advanced to be a product of humans or a natural phenomenon (something you're probably wrong about), do you know two things that would still be more likely than the aliens sending a flotilla which you're the first person seeing? 1. Said aliens radioing schematics in secret to a human party. 2. A James Bond state-sponsored villain making technology in secret in a cave. Which would still be absolutely ridiculous, but would at least wouldn't involve someone making it 100-1000 light years across the sheer vastness of space just to deliver some fancy stuff in the sky then somehow leave without us knowing about it in such numbers that you'll just happen to see it in the sky. If aliens were coming here right now, they would be making less space launches than humans, and you'd be lucky to witness a human space launch as it is.
The reason that's frustrating is cause this (both the medical zebra, and the unknown distribution of alien life) goes both ways. Aliens could be common enough to send stray radio signals and space probes at frequency high enough that some small portion of the interstellar rocks whizzing by the solar system like ʻOumuamua could be probes, or have a probe attached to them, probably some even stranded due to a gravitational capture by a Solar system body, and some signals like the Wow signal received by us could be artificial in nature.
We haven't seen much in the way of evidence to rule such a thing out. Our own Voyager 2 may cross the star system disk of a hypothetical civilization around Sirius in 300000 years, and we're just beginning, and we don't know how many other civilization are doing it. Saying “it is definitely not” is also not completely productive, because one of the interesting things about exploring space is that you're not quite sure what you're going to find, so there needs to be a part of you prepared to find anything. It's not called “the unknown” without a reason, and that's where we're looking.
But when you're quick to judge every UFO as aliens, it kind of becomes a necessity and a bore to reply more and more definitely with “no”, “no”, and “no” every time, cause it's just much ado about nothing. Can we, please, call it a “winning ticket”, after we scratched it off and seen it is indeed winning?
P.S. I'd say the actual UFOs in the actual Earth skies are closer to “definitely not aliens”, cause that takes several more prerequisites that can be ruled out independently on the probability of alien life. Particularly, a plan to give them fuel to stop at the solar system made thousands of years ago, and something to make such a decision and divert to Earth's atmosphere at the last minute, and in frequency high enough that anybody could see it. Not happening.

If anything, I think it's more likely that the visiting "aliens" are from alternate Earths on other branes or branches of reality than visitors from other stars in our universe because there could well be humongously more of the former than the latter. There's something going on - perhaps - not that I've ever witnessed anything.

This is kinda where I'm at. I think it would be far more likely to encounter future/alternate versions of humanity than someone from another civilization. At least, at this point in our development.
That is what I keep thinking sometimes. What if aliens are human? Human just like the rest of us except more advanced, maybe from alternate Earths or such.

Yes I do realize that. It's just fun to speculate
I would speculate either deliberate genetic engineering or just a variation in the evolutionary path - there being no "correct" way as only surviving long enough to produce offspring is necessary. Humans are not the supreme example of life, no matter that some people seem to believe this to be the case. We will probably continue to interfere in our development through gene editing and/or cybernetic enhancement.
Ironically the best film that might point to the existence of ET is one that hardly anyone remembers. Let’s say I am an alien and I send a Bracewell probe to Earth. No FTL, no handwavium.
My probe does an an 1,500 km Leonov-like aerobrake in such a way as to do a resonant return in a couple of decades or so. It would not break up like Chelyabinsk or Peekskill…but it’s contrail would be smooth and laminar…like that of NASA’s Stardust probe…only longer and faster, right?

My probe does an an 1,500 km Leonov-like aerobrake in such a way as to do a resonant return in a couple of decades or so. It would not break up like Chelyabinsk or Peekskill…but it’s contrail would be smooth and laminar…like that of NASA’s Stardust probe…only longer and faster, right?

I'm not sure what you mean by resonant return here - resonance doesn't apply in this case. Resonance refers to the increased amplitude of vibration of a system when it reacts to a constituent frequency of a periodically applied force that excites a natural frequency of the system. An object decelerating by interacting with an atmosphere to lose kinetic energy is not a resonance phenomenon.
I looked at the 1972 fireball footage again and saw nothing different. Perhaps it was an alien space probe, more probably it was a meteorite - perhaps nickel-iron. Confirmation bias is something to be eschewed.
My favorite speculation, UFO's are Time Traveling Tourists from the future....
In the here and now I look up and I see a UFO....
Sometime in the future, after TT is invented, I buy a ticket for a TTT where, during the trip, I look down and see my previous self seeing the UFO I am inside.
