I never understood the difference. I guess with Trekker, if you are fond of hiking that would be considered a Trekker because you are always trekking through the wilderness or whereever. Trekkie had a nice ring to it even though I always thought fans of the original owned the term. I guess because of this indecision I have always considered myself a fan who likes Star Trek.

Trekkie used to have the connotation of being obsessed beyond reality and having no personal life. So self conscious Trekkies started calling themselves Trekkers.

I was a Trekkie in 1966 and I'm still a Trekkie now. Those people who came up with "Trekker" because they looked down on Trekkies as inferior, apparently don't understand what Star Trek is all about.
