Coming in 4K - Star Trek's 1-IV??

Wasn't The Twilight Zone Blu-ray released by... Paramount?

I agree Star Trek home media isn't great compared with some others - Classic Doctor Who for example. Presumably they don't see the value in creating VAM, which is the case across the industry. Most releases don't have anything like the extras we got in the heyday of DVD in the mid-2000s.

Possibly this is because home media in general is declining. They also got burnt with the whole TNG Blu-ray thing which did not meet expectations. The Roddenberry Vault has also been a regular in the clearance bins.

Perhaps they overestimate the market, or don't target the fans well enough.

The only genuinely premium Trek release I can think of was the 50th anniversary boxed set with TOS, TAS and the movies. That had exclusive bonus features and art cards, quality packaging etc. It sold out pretty quickly.

Perhaps a lesson there.

Got to watch part of The Search for Spock tonight. Looks pretty good for an 80's movie, except I had one "WTF?" moment. When the Enterprise fires the first time on the Bird-of-Prey, we get the internal shot with Kruge screaming "emergency power!", this shot is very, very yellow.

TMP - I did a double-take when the opening credits rolled for TMP, they were soft and blurry. Tapping "details" on the remote, lo and behold, it was 4K HDR dolby blahbetyblah...

...but the inlaid text with the Klingon and Vulcan scenes quickly reassure this is a proper 4K release. .

You mean the subtitles when they're speaking in their own languages? Those are player generated not on the film itself (to my great disappointment). That's the sharpness you're seeing. They are in generic fonts where the original films had specialized fonts. Only The Wrath of Khan has the original subtitles.

CBS Blu-Ray and Image Entertainment. Credit Image for going to real work on it. If it were merely a CBS/Paramount release, we'd have had nothing but the episodes.

I noticed that, too. I even doubled back to an older copy, to make sure that I hadn't just completely forgotten what that was supposed to look like.

NBC cameras ? :)

I'm looking at buying the movies separately on blu-ray (as I don't have a 4K player or TV). For TWOK, is the new 2021 version a step-up from the 2016 release? Or is it just the same print repackaged?

There is no step up. The 2016 is perfect. In fact, it's a better transfer than the other 3 recent transfers.

The set itself comes with both versions.

Not in every country. The Australian set is just four 4K discs. No Blu-Ray versions.

I wish this were the norm in the states. I really don't understand why they bother putting in the standard Blu Rays. If I'm buying 4K then I wouldn't need the Blu Ray. if I don't have a 4K player, then I wouldn't buy the 4k discs.... It's even worse when upgrading some films, like the James Bond pictures. I got the Daniel Craig 4K set which came with standard blu rays - which I already had in the 24 film box set. So now I have two sets of blu rays of his films in addition to the 4k. What a waste. Worse, when I got Die Hard in 4K they included the old blu ray, not even a BD copy of the new transfer. WTF???

When I got the Indiana Jones 4K box set, I was beyond thrilled they didn't include the standard blu rays.

Is the Blu-Ray offensive just by sitting there breathing in that black inserted tray? Pass it on to a friend. In fact they've never made it easier than in this particular circumstance.

Nobody gets to say "Well I didn't get mine, I didn't get what I put in for, it didn't count, unless it came to me in such a way that deprived someone else of getting his, because America, F-Yeah!!" (how antivaxermaskers seem to want out of the pandemic). The discs were complimentary.

The level of snark on this board really jumped recently.

It's half of the contents of the box. If I get rid of the Blu Rays, I have a half empty box on the shelf. I actually like the box.

Everyone I know who wanted the movies on BD already has them. I'd sooner give them the code for the digital copy since most "normals" tend to stream anyway.

What makes you say that? You really think they don't use these to jack the price up on the sets? They're just generously gifting them to consumers? "Hey thanks for buying the 4k, here are some free duplicates to give to your friends?" That's not how the force works. Take away the 4 blu rays and I can guarantee there's a price drop, even if it's only ten bucks. A 4K disc with "bonus" Blu Ray and DVD copy, etc. for $30 a pop isn't a case full of freebies.

The point is that there's no need for it other than to drive up the MSRP.

They were complimentary. Because the Indiana Jones 4 movie Set contained 4 UHD discs and no Blu-rays and the MSRP was exactly the same as the 4 movie Star Trek set.
Also the new Blu-rays are superior to the old Blu-rays. So you weren't just getting the same old Blu-rays as before you were getting remastered versions of the movies.

Well that could also mean the Indy Jones set has a higher MSRP. But sure, I'm not in the business so what do I know? It just honestly feels like a waste and I'm not convinced they labels are gifting me free copies. It costs money supply the discs, insets and cases. They'd save themselves a ton by not providing them, especially since they're selling the Blu Rays struck from the 4K prints separately anyway. They would be biting into their own bottom line.

The cost to manufacture the extra discs, cases and artwork is either written off (doubtful) or added to the price (more likely).

Even if it's only an additional $10.
