Shades of the Showa Riders too.

Kiramager was subtly in the same universe as Gekiranger. Sena had the SCRTCH logo on her sports gear from the start, even before they made it explicit with the crossover episode.

And in the finale of Kamen Rider Saber, we saw a HumaGear from Zero-One in a crowd scene, implying they were in the same universe, even though that doesn't make a lot of sense.

The last time Inoue worked on Super Sentai was Jetman. He was the head writer for Death Note. He's also well known in the Kamen Rider franchise

Inoue is crazy when he has free reign, but with Super Sentai he’s obviously going to have to have more restrictions.

I heard he wrote a love story that involved a geometric shape? WTH?

 

Toshiki Inoue is back? Wow. Not sure how I feel about that. He did two of my favorite early-Heisei series, Jetman and Kamen Rider Agito, as well as Kamen Rider 555, which was rather good. But I haven't liked his recent stuff for the franchise -- his Zi-O 2-parter that was theoretically a Kiva tribute had almost nothing to do with it and was just weird, and his Ryuki reunion miniseries and the Decade vs. Zi-O video specials were way too dark and grim. Obviously this isn't going to be in that vein, though.

But Ryuta Tasaki as head director is good news. He's one of the best.

He wouldn't be the first...

Another reminder of Go-Busters, like the pleather costumes, and the Red-Blue-Yellow human characters with a primate-themed Blue and a female Yellow. Although the "sunglasses" are a lot more flamboyant this time.


I was reminded by a comment on Twitter that the one previous time that two consecutive Sentai seasons have been in a shared continuity (crossover movies/specials aside) was Denziman and SunVulcan, which shared a villain (Queen Hedorian, played by Machiko Soga, later known as Bandora/Rita Repulsa) and some of the Planet Denji backstory.

Are Kamen Rider Kyuuga and Ryuki worth watching?
I just checked and Zero-One is up on the ShoutTV website, but they don't have it on Tubi yet, and that's where I'm planning on watching the Kamen Rider, Super Sentain, and Ultraman shows.

 

I found Kuuga repetitive and mediocre, with a one-note lead character (which is odd, because its head writer Naruhisa Arakawa went on to do some of my favorite Super Sentai seasons), but some people think it's really good, apparently. Ryuki is from head writer Yasuko Kobayashi, perhaps the best KR/Sentai writer (she's also the head writer for the Attack on Titan anime among others), and it's pretty good, though I don't consider it one of her best. Both are pretty dark shows; Kuuga has a massive death toll (really, it gets ridiculous how many people the villains kill), while Ryuki is more psychologically dark and emotionally intense.

I just signed up for Tubi for unrelated reasons, and it looks to me like it has only a partial selection of the tokusatsu shows that ShoutFactory has, and none that it doesn't have. So I don't see what would make it preferable.

 

The COVID special episodes of Kamen Rider Zero-One kept the "Superhero Time" Bumpers that have Kiramager in them front and center.

Yep. They really made SaruBrother's behind red LOL

 

I prefer it because I can watch it on my PS4/TV instead of just my computer, which is all I can do on the ShoutTV website. And of all the Ultraman, Sentai, and Kamen Rider series on ShoutFactoryTV, Kamen Rider Zero-One is the only one I'm not seeing on Tubi.

 

I thought it only had a few of the Sentai series that Shout does, but I could be misremembering.

 

Switch to PlutoTV. Zero-One is there.

I know there are cultural differences, but are the sentai series getting....more bizarre lately for a reason?

 

They're being more "Experimental" instead of going back to the traditional formula.

It's a good thing, instead of making formulaic Sentai, they're trying new things.

 

The divorce from Hasbro/Power Rangers is almost complete so they can get more experimental, loose and less constricted.

Hasbro is going to their thing. Sentai is going to do their thing. Some are happy about it and some wishes they were still together.

 

I wasn't aware that the PR connection was keeping them limited in their story approaches, although it has seemed to me that the tendency to feature English signage and logos on the equipment was probably intended to make the shows and the merchandise suitable for overseas adaptation, even going back to the beginning with Gorenger.

I mean, the PR adaptations rarely stick that close to the original stories, concepts, and characters anyway, so I'm not sure why that would restrict what Toei is able to do with their stories. The only post-Disney seasons that have even come close to being faithful to the original concepts were Samurai (which was slavishly faithful to Shinkenger but did it much worse) and Beast Morphers (which kept the same general premise but changed most of the characters and the specific stories).
