Spoilers Why I think Discovery is ending after season 4

The Expanse is on its "final season" even though we know there are 3 books worth of stuff if someone else wants to take it up

I'm guessing the main reason they are ending it now is the difference in time scale between the novelverse and the books becomes more and more apparent over time. The Roci crew are supposed to be late middle age (even given anti-aging medicines) by the end of the series, but obviously the cast is still pretty young.

Be pretty fucking weird if the show was canceled after this was published today, but hey, anything's possible.

The most watched original series on Paramount+ in 2021 was one of the service’s oldest titles, CBS All Access carryover Star Trek: Discovery.

Assuming it's accurate. Also if it's hitting in the right Demographics as well. Also if the costs are worth it. The older shows become the more expensive they become to make. People start getting raises and all of that.

Main reason I dont think its ending is modern shows absolutely love bigging up the "final season" for the ratings. I see no reason to leave people hanging if CBS/Para know its the end.

One of the cast members of the Expanse has hinted that the story may eventually continue in other forms. (I'm guessing Amazon original movies) And with the eventual gap of years in the story line, it's not a bad idea.

I understand that but my point is that studios these days don't pass up a chance for a "final season" media bomb. Disco will not just get cancelled the way stuff like Firefly used to

And The Expanse ending is relevant to Discovery because...?

The show was already cancelled. It's just taking along time to die. Like another franchise with a star named Michael. That of course being Halloween. Just when you think it's over and it's safe to turn on the tv again, Burnham shows up with another whispering speech.
Funny you mention that whispering stuff because I’ve been watching a lot of episodes of Law and Order SVU and I’ve noticed how much Olivia Benson whispers on that show. I’ve been watching that show for a long time and never noticed that before.

I don't mean to be a stick in the mud but both comments were non-sequitur, not even starting on the thread's track to begin with.
Fair enough. Being off the rails would imply I was ever near them

Anyway my guess is we’ll hear something next month, it is just a guess

It was. Trek is always in a state of being cancelled. All the shows are basically made for free and given to CBS as thanks for at least given them a shot before being cancelled.

What about this thought?

Could the show undergo a name change for next year? It’s not being billed as the final season, but I think it could leave the Discovery moniker behind.

Consider: They’re setting things up with Zora this season. What if the DMA “destroys” Discovery, or so the crew thinks, but in reality, it’s badly damaged (a la the USS Stargazer). The crew abandons ship and continues their adventures on the USS Voyager-J while Zora and the DOTs repair Discovery and it sits for a while until Craft finds it.

Just a random thought on a Monday morning.

I do like this a lot. A lot. Consistent with many of the ideas in the series - lots of spore drive ships, Discovery is "an antique", the various Voyager, Janeway and Kirk name drops. Reposition the show big time so its less like SNW perhaps as well (welcome, Academy?)

Shows can't change their titles like that, otherwise it legally becomes a different show and the season and episode count has to reset to 1. That's why Stargate SG-1 had to abandon their plans of changing their title to Stargate Command for their ninth season. In other words if such a name change were being planned, that would still make this season the final season of Star Trek Discovery and the next season would have to be season 1 of a whole new show. Shows can only get away with minor changes to their titles while still legally staying the same show, like when Enterprise changed its title to Star Trek Enterprise in its third season, or how NCIS gradually shortened its title over the course of the series, where when it started it was actually called Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service and it's now just called NCIS.

Yes, that is true. It would technically be the last season of Star Trek Discovery and the launch of a new show, but the idea makes some sense with what we know at present. This has also happened with many shows before:

All in the Family ended and Archie Bunker’s Place launched (the main character stayed, but the setting changed from his family’s life to him running a bar).

The Andy Griffith Show ended and Mayberry RFD launched (the focus shifted from Andy Taylor’s family to Sam Jones’ family in the last season of TAGS, and they became the focus of the new show).

The Golden Girls ended and The Golden Palace launched (three of the four Golden Gurls buy a hotel and that becomes the premise).

I’m sure there are others that I’m not thinking of at the moment. In each of those examples, the original show ended, but the bulk of the show continued under a new name.
