Episode #27 of "Mirrorman" establishes a new status quo for the series (and makes it even more like a regular Ultraman show):

Okay, my fault, I misremembered that Mebius episode with UltraSeven last week was not part of the 55th Anniversary Campaign, and at the time I couldn't quite figure out what it was about. This week, there's another such upload, episode #37 of "Ultraman", and I think these are done to promote the upcoming Ultraman convention in Japan:

In "Ultraman Cosmos", episode #61, the Defense Forces have retrofitted the alien mecha Hellzking, and things obviously go wrong:

A good Trigger episode this week, with a comedic villain/monster getting into a sumo match against Trigger and turning out to be sympathetic, and a nice story arc for Yuna as everyone tries to protect her and she proves her ability to take care of herself as she grows into her Yuzare powers. (Interesting that Ignis is the only one who sees that from the start, and helps her.) Excellent miniature work, showing off some set pieces like an elevated train, another apartment interior, and bits of business with drivers on the ground fleeing in their vehicles. Some decent physical comedy from Trigger too as he reacts to the monster's weird fighting style and then gets into the sumo match.

While the comedy of the monster didn't work for me, all the rest more than made up for that. Really good episode, and damn, the miniatures are once again brilliant. They also found a way to make the apartment interior even more impressive.

I loved that bit with the little ferrari car spinning out of control

I was hoping they'd matte in a driver getting out of the car and running off.

I think the reason we love miniature effects is because it reminds us of playing with our toys as kids. That's why CGI has never had the same appeal to me.

Shortly after Hayata is reassigned to the Paris HQ, all radio signals in Japan are mysteriously jammed, in episode #22 of "Ultraman":

The next Ultraman series has been trademarked

"Utraman Decker"

There have been leaks surrounding this specific name as well, namely that Decker is basically the Dyna to Trigger's Tiga, but with a more technological motif and he'll be using cards.

Oh, that explains it. Probably using it as an excuse to tie into a collectible card game, like Kamen Rider Ryuki, Digimon Tamers, and others have done.

So does "Dyna to Trigger's Tiga" mean that it will be a sequel series in the same universe? I gather that the norm these days is to set each show in a different universe, but with frequent interdimensional crossovers.

I wonder if it also means that the Ultra host will be more of a wisecracking bad boy in contrast to his wholesome, gentle predecessor.

Well, shows of the last decade have used figures, medals, and even cards (in the case of Ultraman Orb) to power up, so it's not really a new thing in the Ultra series.

Well, Ginga and Ginga S are obviously set in the same universe, as Ginga S is basically just a second season for Ginga, but otherwise, yeah, it's been different universes with pretty much every new series.

Episode #22 of "Mirrorman" shows that Kyotaro shares a prominent character flaw with Marty McFly:

Of course. Trigger has the Hyper Keys, for instance. But a card-based system can take it farther because there can be an actual card game involved, rather than just a set of collectible objects. I guess that's why it's done so often in toku and anime.

The Tsuburaya Convention is going on in Japan, so there are some more news.

For example, a new teaser and a re-issuing of the already released trailer for Shin Ultraman have the new Japanese release date of 13 May 2022:

Before that in March, there is going to be an Ultraman Trigger movie:

There's a new promo poster for season 2 of the Netflix anime:

And, probably more as a reminder that this was still in the works, the makers of the CG-animated US-produced Netflix movie talked a little about the project:

Do the movies get streamed on the YouTube channel?
Shin Ultraman is a theatrical release, so we in the west might get a home video release and some event screenings. The Trigger movie appears to be going to Tsuburaya Imagination, the studio's own streaming service in Japan, so we might get a YouTube release that's region-blocked in Japan, or we'll have to wait for when it is released together with the series in the US.
