In the grand scheme of things, the fact that a sports player will make millions a year while teachers, firemen, policemen and the like don't make shit shows how our society values things.

Apparently sports is more important than your kids getting a good education.

Sports is more important because we treat athletes like gods. One of my friends has a boss who was a former Russian athlete. He could tell the government were to stick it over there and suffer no consequences. I work with kids daily and the exceptionalism and the emphasis on athletics is everywhere. Until people stop purchasing it that will not change.

I'm pretty sure baseball players don't make tax laws. Bitch at your congressman/senators who also don't pay a lot of taxes.

That is where taxes for both them and owners come into play. I don’t mind someone earning a lot of money off of the revenue they generate, but they should have a much higher tax burden.

I don't know. I've always found the sheer amount of money paid obscene. I'm all for people making money off their time and talents but it's just ridiculous to me when it comes to professional sports and the veneration they get.

Yeah, let's bring back the good old days when players made shit so the owners can rake in even more revenue.

Even better, bring back the reserve clause so those greedy fucks can learn their place again.

Barring that, yes I believe the players should get more pieces of the money they make-that's what I meant that people should make money off of their talents. When I say "they should be paid a lot less" I mean all of professional sports, from the owners all the way down.

A lot of analysts I follow seem to think that something will get done by February. I hope so, but is that supposed to be a drop dead date? They aren't even talking now (That I've heard) and they are far apart. Of course I remember the last NHL Lockout, and how they finally locked themselves into a room and negotiated for hours on a deal like that final day. Maybe something like that will happen, but I'm not really optimistic right now.

All of those revenue streams are linked back to the platyers. There would be precisely zero revenue without the guys who play the games.

February 15 (-ish, various teams have different dates), which is when camps open for spring training, is generally considered to be the drop-dead date for a full 162-game season. But Bruce Meyer is holding firm and refusing to let the union get rolled like they did when Tony Clark negotiated the last CBA.

I just begrudge the system.

This feels like a non-sensical statement to me. Labor is responsible for MLB making $14 billion a year, give or take. Why should labor not be paid? (Edit: And I should add that labor's share of revenues is the smallest it's been in like three decades.)

Pre-pandemic, the movie business scored roughly $12 billion a year, domestically, just in terms of box-office receipts (to say nothing of home video and streaming revenue). Do you begrudge that system as well?
