Firebird's Sketch of the Week Series

Got another batch of drawings done this week. I had to admit defeat on completing the EVA-Trek one-shot manga, the amount of work I was having to put into finishing a single page ended up sucking the joy out of the process. So I made the call to abandon the manga, but instead of letting the pages languish in my archives unseen, I decided to share them. Who knows, maybe one day I'll revisit them - I have the script and the rough drafts done, so it would just be a matter of finding the time to draw them.

As far as writing the series goes, I've got a second draft on the pilot outline done, the 2nd episode's outline is in progress, and I'm coming up with ideas and plots for the rest of the series arc. Writing 25 teleplays and a screenplay on my own is... more intimidating than I anticipated, but it's still fun in the planning stages!

We've got a double-shot of sketches today because I spent most of Saturday in the house dealing with side-effects from the covid booster. Less fatigue than the last shot, but more annoying because it wasn't enough to make me sleepy.

Sketch of the Week #104 / 2021 Artwork #121: After rewatching the excellent Your Name last night, I decided to do this sketch of Mitsuha looking as teary-eyed as I get after every time I see the movie. Why, yes, I have no shame about admitting anime makes me cry like a bitch, what of it?

Sketch of the Week #105 / 2021 Artwork #122: The main cast of EVA-Trek has a photo shoot in the Transporter Room set. This was probably the most complex E-T drawing I've done so far. While I used a reference image for Shinji, Asuka, and Rei's pose, I had to account for the camera angle in the background, while getting in all the little details of the transporter pad and materialization matrix wall behind them. Ended up having to do this drawing in two sessions that took a total of around eight hours or so. The only thing that bothers me about this one is I kinda screwed up Asuka, but there's so much that went right with this, I can overlook it.

Very cool, but the odd perspective makes them look smaller than normal, as if they just returned to the ship and had a Transporter accident that shrunk them!!
That’s why I usually try to shy away from weird camera angles because of the perspective challenges. It’s really hard to convey depth of field when doing a drawing like this!

Hmm, maybe if you'd try a fisheye lens version of the transporter room and people, although I realise that would be even more weird.. :D

And from past experience trying to draw a fisheye angle by hand… I don’t wanna try that ever again

I really dig that one, it's just a cool shot! But yeah, I think there's something off with the perspective of the background in relation to the characters in the foreground, and I think I know what it is: the perspective lines defined by the characters do not align with the ones on the transporter background. I tried to illustrate and quickly fix what I mean in Photoshop:

When the background is adjusted it works better for me, but yeah, it's absolutely a tricky shot …

You’re absolutely right, @Michael! That’s the problem with doing this all by hand and no real reference of the transporter from that angle, it’s all guesswork and hoping it all comes out right… which can have mixed results, as we can see, haha.

I think all things considered you did rather well on this piece, and it's pretty clear that you put a ton of work into it, so don't beat yourself up about it. :)

Y'know, with as often as I seem to be doing drawings at this point, I don't know why I still call these "Sketches of the Week." I guess at this point I'm in too deep to change it up, so the name will stick for now. Anyway, here's a mid-week update with a couple more new drawings.

Sketch of the Week #106 / 2021 Artwork #123: "I'm as mysterious as a shade." Miku from The Quintessential Quintuplets impersonates her sister Yotsuba to sneak past a hall monitor the day of midterms.

Sketch of the Week #107 / 2021 Artwork #124: A Star Trek: The Motion Picture 42nd anniversary tribute sketch. This might be the best freehand drawing of the Refit Enterprise I've ever done, minus some issues with drawing concentric circles for the secondary hull. Kinda thinking about going back and coloring this one in, but for now, I think I'll keep in black and white.

Sketch of the Week #108 / 2021 Artwork #125: The concept for this one popped up in my head yesterday morning and I couldn't stop laughing at the image of Santa Gendo being ordered to go caroling with Shinji. So here's a one-page holiday vignette from EVA-Trek:

"We wish you a Mari Christmas, we wish you a Mari Christmas, hopefully free from an angel attack."

FREEHAND!??
Yup! Only thing I had was the screenshot to the side to reference so I could get the proportions right.
