The Most Disliked Episode of DIS, Season 3: 2021 Edition...

Farscape One

Admiral

This is a twist on a game that is played here, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your most favorite or the one you deem the 'best.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win. Pretty simple. Enjoy!

Season 3... it's hard for me to say if this was a better or worse season than season 2. Elements of this season are better, while other elements are worse. Just trying to find episodes to save is frustrating, because so many feel like they blend together.

But a standout for me was "Unification III". Great story and performances, and it was nice to see Vulcans and Romulans actually come together.

You beat me to it with Unication, an episode 20 years in the making. :D

I do really like S3, but again there were some issues with how it ended. Not quite as glaring as S2, but YMMV.

I think Adira was a great addition to the cast, and Forget Me Not is an easy save for me. Seeing the Trill homeworld again was a joy, and seeing how Adira ended up with the symbiont was a real heartbreaker.

I also like how in the episode, and back in DS9's Rejoined, sexuality is a completely insignificant part of the episode, making me feel more noticed than I used to at other times during Berman Trek.

Season 3 also has it's problems, but for me is an immense step up from season 2.

I'll save "Terra Firma II." One of the great frustrations of Disco is that they're excellent at more episodic stories, and completely incompetent at serialization, and yet they keep leaning away from their strengths and doubling down on the thing they're worst at. Disco reminds me of friends I've had who can't stop dating the same terrible man -- please just realize how much you have to offer, and stop returning to this same bad place again and again!

All by way of saying... though I like the arc of season 3 much more than season 1 and 2, the high point of the year is still "Terra Firma", the most standalone adventure. It also got me actually excited for Section 31 for the first time! (Though at this point I'm fairly skeptical it'll ever manifest)

Saving "Terra Firma" because it was great to see the actual culture of the Mirror Universe. Plus, Michelle Yeoh being the center of an episode is never a bad thing.

Ah the enigma of season 3. Several really great individual episodes juxtaposed with some awful serialization and mystery box storytelling. I'll save Die Trying because it introduces the new Federation and the very excellent Admiral Vance. I thoroughly enjoyed the episode.

People of Earth is next for me. Seeing Earth not being a part of the Federation was a jarring but interesting twist.

I recently rewatched "Scavengers", and it was way better this time!

The first time through, I think I was just so pissed at Burnham's decision I couldn't get on board with the rest of it. It's still terrible pacing to so quickly jerk her in and out of that first officer slot, and it's still deeply harmful to her character given the way the season plays out, but once I set aside my annoyance at the setup -- everything else in this episode is great, even the rest of Burnham's story! That rescue mission to the planet was so well done -- well scripted, excellently performed, perfectly staged and directed. A great showcase for their 32nd Century vibe.

Saving "That Hope Is You II." In general, I get the feeling I enjoy the wrap-up episodes better than most do. Of them, "Su'Kal" and the finale are superior to the middle chapter, IMO. The finale wins out, albeit just barely, thanks to its terrific closing scenes.

Saving "Su'Kal" next. Because someone needed to save him. :)

(All jokes aside, it was a good story and good performances.)

I do like this as an intro to the 32nd Century, there's a lot of cool stuff here. Exceptional work from the production team. Gorgeous locations. SMG brilliantly carries it, I am so happy this show has her. The amount of cracks in the writing she has managed to paper over with her performance, it's remarkable.

"Far from Home"
"The Sanctuary"

Far From Home is a decent episode where we catch up with the DIS crew before they make contact with Burnham. I liked Saru doing his best to uphold his ideals during a rocky first contact.

"The Sanctuary"
"There Is a Tide..."

I'll save "There Is a Tide..."

"The Sanctuary" left me less engaged than any other third-season episode on my most recent rewatch. It's fiiiine, and there are a handful of great moments for characters like Adira and Stamets. (Georgiou's "you had me at unsanctioned mission" was good, too.)

The core adventure kind of left me cold, though.

And the winner of season 3 is "The Sanctuary".

Thank you all for playing. I'll post the Finals for DISCOVERY later today.

An even better argument for "Sanctuary" being the winner/loser -- that Georgiou moment is from "Scavengers" :bolian:

Perfect timing -- "Sanctuary" is next up in my season 3 rewatch.

It's interesting, for me there aren't really any totally failed episodes this season. There are certainly some weaker hours, but no total junkers in that "Red Angel"/"Perpetually Infinity"/"The War Without The War Within" way. Probably "Die Trying" is my personal season 3 low, and there's still a lot of good stuff in that one.

Whoops!

Also, I briefly wondered why there's no season 4 round up yet. Clearly, I'm living in the future...
