The Holiday Season. It has....begun.

Yes, I know it's early but I just wrapped my first Christmas presents. The radio is already playing Christmas music and the stores are full of Christmas stuff (since Halloween, actually, but who's counting).

I love the holiday season--like freaking, jump up and down, rush to watch A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life, make cookies and buy crap LOVE it. I come from a family of atheists (well, we have one ex-Catholic; we went temporarily wrong there) and all of us are NUTSO about Christmas & New Year's Eve. It's all my Mom's fault. She loves Christmas and has the skills to put Martha Stewart to shame. I love giving gifts, wrapping them up and putting them under the tree.

The problem with this year (among all the others, I mean) is that we are moving. Our new house is still being built and we just signed the papers to close the deal on selling the house we're in now. Assuming the deal goes through, we'll be on alert for when we can move in--they say Dec. 15th but I'm thinking that's way too optimistic. We might actually be moving on around Christmas Day. Hubby doesn't want me to put up our tree because we'd just have to take it down again. Plus, most of the Christmas stuff is in our storage space. *sigh* Maybe I'll buy one of those little potted ones and then plant it in the yard of the new house. I miss having all the tacky Christmas décor up in the house.

My 88 year old mom is having surgery in the beginning of December but says she will have my niece or me, or my sister (or all of us) help her put up her Christmas Extravaganza this year. I actually can't wait. Last time I visited, I asked if she really wanted to put out all of her nutcrackers (her collection, I think, is somewhere around 70). She said yes, of course, and my niece asked why. Mom's response?

So that's where my scifi-geek genes came from.

I know, tl:dr. ANYWAY.... Show me your holiday extravaganza! What is the holiday "way" in your home?

Thanksgiving for me has been a time of change. We moved from Indiana to California over the extended Thanksgiving weekend in '79 and I moved back from Wisconsin to California in '06. I also got married on the Saturday after Thanksgiving eleven years ago.

I was never really a Christmas person...then I got married the week before Christmas two years ago, and that was the anniversary of our first date. To add to that, we bought a house a year and a half ago. This house was built in 1918 and had the most wonderful woodwork and built-ins. It was made for Christmas decorations. Aaaaand my husband loves decorating for Christmas. So now I'm kinda a Christmas person!

Buy a bunch of those Christmas light projectors that people use on the outside of their homes, then set them up all over the place inside your home. Voila, lights and decorations with almost no clean up!

We haven't put up a tree or decorations for the last few years ever since our youngest moved out. There just never seemed to be any point in it; although the cats would have likely appreciated it, if only to play a game of "Bat the Ornaments".

I am however looking forward to this year only because we can finally have our traditional get together on Christmas Eve with family and friends of the family after missing out the last two years due to Covid and me having to work the year before that. On Christmas Day itself we will be going to my parents for dinner as we aways do, so I have that to look forward as well.

Overall, I only view the holidays anymore as just a time to gather with family and less to do with buying material things. Gift giving is just not the same anymore like when one is a kid or has kids who are younger. The wife and I don't even buy anything for each other anymore by mutual agreement since we feel we already have enough "stuff" and again, just being together both with each other and others is enough. Not to mention the day after Christmas is more significant to us being that's our anniversary.

When I was 8, my brother 9 and sister 11 my dad hired a video camera to film Christmas day and when I watch it now it's like that scene in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation when Clark is stuck in the attic and is watching an old reel of a childhood Christmas. So far I've only watched Jingle All The Way but it's The Muppets Christmas Carol when Christmas really starts.

'Tis the season to be jolly and joyous....

One of the radio stations here started playing Christmas music at the start of November. But it turned out to be Christmas music mixed in with their regular music. Now it's just non-stop Christmas music.
